About this award
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) received a cooperative agreement award of $302,370 from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) under the Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) program (CFDA 15.015), effective July 16, 2025, through August 31, 2027. This award funds a collaborative task agreement between NDOW and the BLM Battle Mountain District to implement hazardous fuels reduction and ecosystem restoration activities across central Nevada. The project delivers tangible restoration services including pinyon-juniper removal, herbicide application, and native plant seeding in the Little Fish Lake and Monitor Valleys, with particular emphasis on high-risk areas within the wildland-urban interface (WUI).
The GNA program facilitates partnerships between federal and non-federal entities to expand capacity for forest, rangeland, and watershed restoration. Under this agreement, NDOW will execute year-round restoration activities through its own staff, partners, and contracted personnel, creating fire-adapted landscapes that reduce wildfire risks while protecting wildlife habitats and natural resources. The coordinated effort between BLM and NDOW leverages each entity's specialized capabilities in project development, implementation, funding, and community engagement to achieve efficient and effective landscape restoration across central Nevada in alignment with BLM's public lands management and local economic support objectives.
Description
This collaboration, under the good neighbor authority (GNA), will focus on reducing wildfire risks and protecting wildlife habitats by addressing high-risk areas in the wildland-urban interface (WUI). Specific activities include pinyon juniper removal, herbicide application, and seeding in little fish lake and monitor valleys. This project will help to create safer, healthier public lands by creating a more fire adapted environment and promoting the protection of natural resources for the benefit of the public. This agreement aligns with the blms direction to focus on improving public lands management, reducing wildfire risks, and supporting local economies through effective resource management. The work would occur year-round and would be completed with ndows staff, their partners, or contracted personnel. Coordinated efforts between the BLM and ndow will enable partners to maximize their respective capabilities in project development and implementation, funding, and community support to achieve more efficient and effective restoration of lands outside of historic fire regime conditions across central nevada.
