Description

Founded in 1998 at the university of nevada, GBI advances applied research to support sciencebased adaptive management of public lands. For over two decades, the institute has collaborated with BLM to realize a shared mission of sciencebased stewardship of public lands. In doing so, our partnership has supported the professional development of thousands of young conservationists in our region. With active agreements throughout DOI units, primarily in the western US, GBI programs offer structured service opportunities that serve as critical pathways for emerging professionals to gain valuable experience in the natural resource management field. Project opportunities supported by this nofo, such as enhancement of recreation opportunities, monitoring riparian areas, habitat restoration and wildlife protection, development and implementation of natural and cultural resource stewardship plans, preservation of cultural resources, native seed collection, reduction of wildfire risk, and production of materials and programs on natural, cultural, and or paleontological resources enable GBI to further complement the ongoing programmatic initiatives we currently support. Projects will provide opportunities that positively engage veterans or youth, as well as users of public lands, and will help the department work towards its 30 by 30 goal and, more broadly, addresses president biden s executive order 14008, tackling the climate crisis at home and abroad. GBI has long believed that treating the individuals we select and hire to support natural resource public land projects should be treated as professionals. To that end, we encourage that participants are compensated by a living wage, advocate for funding to support seasonal housing costs, and offer all participants a generous benefit package that includes, among other things, paid personal leave and health insurance medical, dental, vision, and prescription for which the premiums that are paid 100% on their behalf. Using the structural resources of the institute, GBI will recruit to hire, on average, eleven dharais to support public land management objectives throughout elmmanaged lands.
