Description
The main objective of this project is to analyze the genetic and functional trait variation of one of new mexicos most important upland restoration grass species which is in high demand for seeding restoration but has unanswered genetic questions. This project will use expert advice to inform genetic and trait sampling and analysis and collate data into an open access database that will inform how to produce this species and how and where to seed this species on the landscape to reduce the risk of genetic issues that could affect performance post-seeding. This information will enable the continuation of this important species into the native plant materials development process which has currently stalled due to these lingering questions and eventually enable large quantities of genetically appropriate seed be available for purchase from the BLM seed warehouse.public benefit: the work outlined will benefit the public by improving ecological services provided by intact native plant communities such as clean air and functioning soils which reduce runoff and risk of flooding to downstream communities. Upland habitats can be degraded and many are in need of genetically appropriate seed which will establish and persist to support return of these ecological functions. This project will provide for the increase in supply of one of new mexicos most important perennial grass species available for restoration. BLM benefit: this project will benefit the BLM by contributing to multiple goals in the national native seed strategy which is a major focus of the BLM plant conservation and restoration program. In order for land managers to place the right seed at the right time in the right place they need to understand how to produce genetically appropriate seed that will germinate, establish and persist in BLM habitats in need of upland restoration. This work will allow for that to happen with side oats grama, an important perennial grass with complex genetics.
