Description

The award purpose is to create a strategic cross boundary fire break through a partnership between aspen fire protection district (afpd), pitkin county open space and trails (pcost), and three parcels of private land. Afpd has identified a 30 acre zone, including the 25 acre pcost red butte ranch open space parcel and 5 acres of private property, as a potential pinch point for high intensity wildfire to spread into the adjacent high fire risk neighborhood. Within those 30 acres, approximately 9.5 overgrown acres require fuels reduction treatment to transform the area into a community fire break. Reducing overgrown and dead vegetation in this area reduces risks not only to adjacent communities but would also provide firefighters with a line of defense between the local wildland area and populated neighborhood to safely combat a wildfire. Importantly to the open space program, this project also provides habitat improvement and an important river adjacent travel corridor for local wildlife.
