About this award
The Bureau of Land Management Utah Region awarded a $150,000 cooperative agreement to Utah State University under the Wildlife Resource Management federal grant program (CFDA 15.247) to analyze strategies for improving Utah prairie dog translocation success. Over the 2022-2027 period of performance, USU will statistically analyze five years of data from the BLM Cedar City Field Office's ongoing studies testing various translocation methods. USU will then devise a two-year research strategy continuing the most effective approaches. The results will be used to update Utah prairie dog translocation guidelines, incorporating any validated methods that enhance short-term survival. If data indicates improved overwinter survival or plague impacts from translocating high-density colonies, the strategies will be adopted into BLM management.
Description
The purpose of this study is to determine strategies to improve utah prairie DOG cynomys parvidens hereafter UPD translocation success the utah prairie DOG revised recovery plan US fish and wildlife service 2012 identifies the continued need for translocation refinement, to increase the short term i e over winter survival of translocated animals in 2018, the cedar city field office ccfo of the bureau of land management initiated a series of studies of public land translocations to determine ways to improve UPD survival after the 2022 season, the ccfo will have 5 years of research data collected from their study using various strategies to improve translocation success additionally, they will have a database of trail camera footage documenting mammalian and avian predators at translocation sites this project will assist the ccfo by statistically analyzing the results of the study to determine which factors contributed to the individual survival at the modified translocation sites from this analysis USU will devise the strategy for an additional 2 year study, continuing to use those factors that were successful the results of this study will be used to update the UPD translocation strategy, such that any methods identified that improve translocation success will be incorporated into the place furthermore, if the study indicates that translocation of high density rangeland colonies to newer colonies, improves over winter survival or ameliorates the impacts of plague, the ccfo will incorporate this strategy into their UPD management guidelines
