About this award
The Bureau of Land Management, under its Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act program (CFDA 15.234), awarded Antfarm DBA Redwind a $195,584 cooperative agreement to engage youth in conservation and land management efforts on public lands in Oregon from February 2022 through February 2025. Specifically, young people will remove noxious plant species from targeted sites, clean up abandoned campsites and dispose of garbage, perform infrastructure and trail maintenance work, and support other land management tasks. Outcomes will be measured quantitatively by acres of invasive plants removed, number of cleanup sites addressed, length of trails maintained, and time spent on infrastructure projects. The award will support youth engagement in conservation while achieving land management goals on Bureau of Land Management property in Oregon.
Description
Measuring square feet or acreage of removal is tangible and a great experience for youth. Youth learn conservation, ecology, and management, and identifying the value of and proper ways to remove noxious plants, and learn the value in the return of native species. 2) guerrilla campsites and garbage removal -specific sites have been identified for removal of garbage, and teaching youth about the "return to the forest" is an essential aspect of this task. Measuring outcomes are simple in counting the number of sites and actions taken. All garbage removed would be categorized, weighed or measured. 3) infrastructure maintenance - each site has specific tasks required to retire sites for the winter, open sites for the spring, and provide routine maintenance. Outcomes are measured through identification of specific tasks performed, time engaged, and positive program outcome as a result of the task completion. 4) trail maintenance - sandy ridge and molalla corridor trails site specific repair, modification, drainage maintenance, and tread work. Specific measurements are length of trails maintained and tasks performed.
