Description
- Activities
- After compiling and cleaning the GPS telemetry dataset, the recipient will fit resource selection functions (rsfs) for each ungulate species by season. Water availability will be mapped from field-recorded permanent water points to build a distance-to-water raster. For forage quantity and quality, the recipient will use modis-derived enhanced vegetation index (250 m, 16- day) and its rate of change. Additional covariates include topography, vegetation cover, and human footprint. Individual utilization distributions will be estimated and aggregated by season to produce population-level density surfaces. Horse and cattle population utilization distribution will serve as proxies for their density in pronghorn and mule deer rsfs to quantify effects of livestock and horses on ungulate selection. Seasonal and annual range sizes will be computed and spatial overlap measured among species. The recipient will fit regression models to test effects of season, distance to water, vegetation quantity quality, and proximity to other species on range overlaps.deliverables and expected outcomes: the recipient will provide statistical analyses, manuscripts, and will present results and anticipates two peer-reviewed manuscripts in leading ecology wildlife journals.intended beneficiary(IES): public land managers, ecologists, and wildlife biologists, those that use public lands.
