About this award

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of Acquisitions and Grants awarded the Washington State Department of Natural Resources a cooperative agreement valued at $1.124 million under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP, CFDA 15.810) for new geologic mapping in Washington State. The award, effective December 1, 2025, through November 30, 2027, supports STATEMAP activities that will produce detailed surficial and bedrock geologic maps addressing natural hazards, resource assessment, and tectonic research across multiple regions in Washington.

The recipient will deliver five new 1:24,000-scale geologic maps and one 1:48,000-scale map covering seven 7.5-minute quadrangles, including areas around the Northern Olympics coastline, Tacoma urban area (Gig Harbor, Steilacoom, and Tacoma North quadrangles), and Thorp and Cyclone Creek. Ancillary products include two geophysical potential-field studies in selected areas to refine map interpretations, technical reports, and Geographic Information System (GIS) databases in GEMS format. Field work will occur from May through October 2026, followed by data processing, sample analysis, map production, and technical writing extending through April 2027. All deliverables are scheduled for delivery to USGS by September 29, 2027, with publication to occur by December 2027.

Description

New geologic mapping in washington state project period: 12/01/2025 through 11/30/2027 purpose the recipient will complete detailed surficial and bedrock mapping for five 7.5-minute quadrangles and one 1:48,000- scale map across four regions. Two areas will include potential-field geophysical studies to refine map interpretations. These efforts will provide updated hazard and resource assessments for washington and support testing of tectonic models for the complex strain patterns associated with oblique subduction. Activities the recipient will begin geologic mapping and geophysical data acquisition on may 1, 2026, with field work concluding by the end of october that year. Data processing, map production, sample analysis, and technical writing will begin after field work and continue through april 2027. Editing, peer review, map and pamphlet revisions, and any additional analysis will take place through june 2027. Final map layout, review, and publication will proceed over the summer and fall, with publication scheduled for december 2027. Delivery to the USGS will be completed by the end of september 2027. Deliverables and outcomes new geologic mapping the recipient will deliver two detailed surficial and bedrock geologic maps at 1:24,000- and one at 1:48,000-scale, technical reports, and GIS databases to the program officer by septmber 29, 2027. This will include the northern olympics coastline and the thorp and cyclone creek 7.5-minute quadrangles. These products will be published internally no later than december, 2027 and delivered to USGS before september 29, 2027. Interim geologic mapping the recipient will provide three interim 1:24,000-scale geologic maps from the tacoma urban area: GIG harbor, steilacoom, and tacoma north 7.5-minute quadrangles will be delivered to the USGS by september 29, 2027, but will be published later as a single map product with the two quadrangles from year 1 by the end of 2028. Aggregate resource mapping the recipient will provide an aggregate resource map for grays harbor county. This will have a technical report and GIS database and will be published prior to delivery to the USGS program office by september 29, 2027. Gems geodatabases the recipient will develop gems level 3 geodatabases for each of the geologic maps described above and publish them with complete fgdc metadata as stand-alone products. These will be delivered to the program officer by september 29, 2027. Intended beneficiaries these mapping areas were selected based on recommendations from a broad panel of stakeholders, including local planners, industry, academia, ngos, federal and state agencies, consultants, and engineers. As a result, projects serve multiple beneficiaries. The work is widely used to: 1) identify and characterize geologic hazards; 2) improve planning under the growth management act through better understanding of water and earth resources; 3) map areas of emerging societal need; and 4) advance knowledge of geologic processes.
