About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey awarded a $194,566.68 cooperative agreement to the University of Rhode Island on December 15, 2025, under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (STATEMAP, CFDA 15.810) to develop geologic maps of coastal Rhode Island's surface and subsurface geology for long-range planning by state and municipal governments, water suppliers, and residents.
The award funds three projects delivering three primary map products. Project 1 involves electrical resistivity profiling and passive seismic measurements along coastal regions, with construction of subsurface layers mapping water, saltwater, and bedrock in the Watch Hill Quadrangle. Project 2 conducts field-based mapping, stratigraphic analysis, sampling, and cliff erosion assessments on Block Island, resulting in a Quaternary geologic map of Block Island. Project 3 digitizes and constructs a statewide groundwater table map for Rhode Island. The outputs—subsurface layer maps for the Watch Hill Quadrangle, a Quaternary geologic map of Block Island, and a statewide depth-to-water-table map—serve intended beneficiaries including the Rhode Island Departments of Health, Emergency Management, and Transportation; the Water Resource Board; municipal governments; and environmental consultants and drilling companies.
Performance runs from December 1, 2025 through November 30, 2027, with place of performance in Rhode Island. The University of Rhode Island, a child entity of the State of Rhode Island, is the direct recipient. The award obligated $194,566.68 as of the award date.
Description
Proposal title: mapping coastal rhode island's surface and subsurface project period: 12/01/2025 ? 11/30/2027 purpose: the recipient intends to develop geologic maps in coastal areas of rhode island to assist in long-range planning by providing surface and subsurface data for cities and towns, state government agencies and residents of the state. These maps include a statewide depth to the water table, susceptibility of block island?s cliffs to erosion, and the current location of salt water beneath some of rhode island?s coastal regions. Activities: ? Project 1: o electrical resistivity profiles along the coastal regions o passive seismic measurements in coastal regions o construction of sub-surface layers (water, salt water and bedrock) in watch hill quadrangle ? Project 2: o field based mapping, stratigraphic analysis, sampling and cliff erosion assessments on block island o construction of a quaternary geologic map of block island ? Project 3: o digitization and construction of a statewide groundwater table for the state of rhode island deliverables and outcome: ? Map of coastal sub-surfaces layer (water, saltwater, and bedrock) in the watch hill quadrangle ? Quaternary geologic map of block island ? State map of depth to water table intended beneficiaries: state agencies (department of health, department of emergency management, department of transportation, rhode island water resource board / department of administration), cities and towns governments, water suppliers, environmental consultants / coring / drilling companies, and state residents.
