About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded $212,782 to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services on September 19, 2025, under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP, CFDA 15.810) STATEMAP component. The two-year project, extending through September 18, 2027, supports bedrock and surficial geologic mapping to advance statewide quadrangle mapping completion. Key deliverables include new 1:24,000-scale geologic maps for the Lancaster quadrangle (bedrock, north half) and North Grantham quadrangle (surficial, southern 55%), accompanied by standard map elements, geologic unit descriptions, bedrock outcrops, and surficial features in both paper and digital formats. The project will also convert geologic databases from 23 pre-existing surficial quadrangles into modern Geologic Map Evaluation and Monitoring System (GEMS) schema formats and support a 1:100,000-scale compilation map of the Pittsburg-Clarksville area with new mapping in the Moose Bog and Rump Mountain quadrangles.
All geologic mapping data will be submitted in GEMS Level 3 format as GIS files to ensure standardization and accessibility. The project incorporates coordination with regional colleagues in Quebec, Vermont, and Maine, collection of age dates and geochemical data, and identification of potential economic targets including critical minerals and water resources. Expected outcomes include support for geologic hazards mapping in areas with steep slopes and flood-prone river valleys, enabling improved infrastructure installation and funding decisions for natural hazard mitigation.
Description
New hampshire geological survey 2025 statemap project period: september 19, 2025 september 18, 2027 award purpose is to continue bedrock and surficial geologic mapping to support the goal of completing statewide quadrangle geologic mapping. This award will support the conversion of select geodatabases associated with formerly and historically produced geologic maps into updated and modern map schema formats. This project will perform field-based geologic mapping to support creation of new geologic maps as follows (all 1:24,000 quadrangles, in whole or part, as indicated): lancaster (bedrock, north half) north grantham (surficial, southern 55%). One copy each of a geologic map with all standard map elements will be produced, and accompanied by all mapping data, including geologic units and descriptions, bedrock outcrops and surficial features. Data from pre-existing geologic maps will be converted to modern map gems schema formats for 23 surficial quadrangles. A 1:100,000-scale compilation map of pre-existing quadrangles in the pittsburg-clarksville area, that includes new mapping at that scale in the moose BOG and rump mountain (new hampshire portion) quadrangles will be supported. This project will include keeping quebec, vermont, and maine colleagues informed on progress, and will include collection of additional age dates, geochemical data. IT may also help to identify potential economic targets, such as critical minerals and water resources. Deliverables will include one paper and PDF copy each of the new geologic maps identified above GIS files of the newly produced maps in geologic map schema (gems) format and, GIS files of the data for the 23 pre-existing surficial quadrangles. All GIS files for all products will be submitted in gems level 3 format. Expected outcomes include the ability to support geologic hazards mapping in areas with steep slopes and river valleys that experienced flooding, infrastructure installation and funding decisions industry projects scope of work development and enhanced groundwater investigations in the newly mapped areas. Intended beneficiaries of the completed activities include, throughout new hampshire: planners, the new hampshire departments of environmental services and transportation the water resources industry land managers hazard mitigation planners and emergency management officials geological and geotechnical consulting firms municipal officials the earth sciences research community and citizens. The field mapping component of these activities will be performed by two (2) geologic mappers and one (1) field assistant under contract to nhgs, in addition to nhgs mapping personnel for north grantham (southern 55%). These mappers were already pre-identified during the project scoping and proposal, and therefore are already known.
