About this award

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a five-year cooperative agreement totaling $409,187 to The University of Central Florida Board of Trustees, effective October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2030, under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808). This joint research program enables collaborative investigation in hydrology and water resources through the collocation of USGS scientists and technicians with UCF faculty and staff in shared facilities. The primary focus involves conducting systematic investigations in northeastern and east central Florida to advance understanding of the hydrologic and biologic resources of Florida and support the nation's water supply sustainability needs.

Under this agreement, the parties will deliver research products and services addressing critical water resource challenges, including: enhanced understanding of hydrologic cycle pathways, chemical and biological processes, and movement rates; improved assessment of hydraulic, chemical, and biological factors affecting water resources from natural and anthropogenic sources; development of new data collection, analysis, and interpretation strategies leveraging emerging technologies; and improved predictive methodologies for hydrologic and biologic system responses to stresses. UCF will provide consultation and qualified research scientists, along with facilities, equipment, services, and laboratory resources to support the collaborative research objectives.

Description

Activities
(1) long-term joint program between the parties to enable research in hydrology and water resources in the related areas of the physical, earth, marine, life, social, and computational sciences, engineering and applied mathematics.(2) collaborative research with collocation of USGS staff and UCF faculty and staff in shared facilities.(3) USGS scientists and technicians conducting investigations in northeastern and east central florida aimed at developing a systematic understanding and description of the hydrologic and biologic resources of florida and other areas of interest relevant to the nation s needs for a continued water supply.deliverables and expected outcomes:(1) improving overall understanding of the pathways, rates of movement, chemical processes, and biological processes in the hydrologic cycle (2) improving overall understanding of the hydraulic, chemical, and biological factors of both natural and human origins that affect the resource (3) developing new strategies for data collection, analysis and interpretation, in light of new knowledge and evolving technologies and (4) improving methods of predicting the response of hydrologic and biologic systems to stresses, whether hydraulic or chemical, and whether of natural or human origin. (5) consultation and advice on the disciplines and shall be furnished by the university by qualified research scientists.(6) facilities and equipment, services, and laboratories shall be provided by the university to the USGS for this cooperative program.intended beneficiary(IES): hydrologic and biologic resources of the northeastern and east-central florida region.
