About this award
Western Michigan University received a $167,148 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of Acquisitions and Grants under the U.S. Geological Survey Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808), effective September 30, 2025, through September 29, 2027. The award funds two complementary geologic mapping projects administered by the Michigan Geological Survey to address outdated and large-scale geologic mapping resources across the state.
Project 1 delivers interactive web-based maps and data products of the surficial geology of Muskegon County, including a 3D web scene, derivative maps, cross-sections, and subsurface data, building on recently updated surficial geologic mapping completed through the USGS StateMap program. Project 2 refines depth-to-bedrock and bedrock topography maps within the Green Bay Lobe footprint in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to improve understanding of sediment distribution and support assessment of critical societal resources including groundwater and aggregates. Both deliverables emphasize digital, publicly accessible map products designed to address current and future local and regional geological resource management issues.
Description
- Activities
- Project 1: activities associated with this project include the creation and sharing interactive web-based maps of the surficial geology of muskegon county including a 3D web-scene, derivative maps, cross-sections, and subsurface data.project 2: the work to produce the proposed depth-to-bedrock and bedrock topography for proposed mapping area will have four parts: compilation of existing data, creation of passive seismic calibration curves, collection of passive seismic depth-to-bedrock measurements, and creation of data products.deliverables and outcomes:project 1: deliverables for this project will be URL(s) links to the published web-based map products.project 2: deliverables for this project will be georeferenced depth-to-bedrock and bedrock elevation maps.
