About this award
The University of Texas at Austin received a $1.24 million Cooperative Agreement awarded on September 16, 2025, under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP), CFDA 15.810, administered by the U.S. Geological Survey. The Texas STATEMAP program is a 50/50 federal-state cost-sharing initiative designed to produce detailed geologic maps and databases that serve as primary data sources for earth-science research and applied needs across Texas. The project period extends from September 16, 2025, through December 15, 2026.
Under this award, the University of Texas at Austin will deliver nine new geologic quadrangle maps at 1:24,000 scale covering areas in the Upper and Middle Texas Coastal Plain, Central and North-Central Texas, and West Texas; one compilation map of the Chinati Mountains State Natural Area; isothermal surface maps for a 40-county geothermal resources area in Eastern Texas; Geologic Mapping Schema (GEMS)-compliant geodatabases for all mapped areas; two ArcGIS StoryMaps for geoheritage sites; and a Texas STATEMAP fact sheet. These deliverables support state and federal resource management agencies, land-use planning entities, and infrastructure development initiatives requiring accurate geological framework information.
Description
The purpose of the program is to produce geologic maps of areas of texas where knowledge of the geologic framework is important. The general goal is to provide a geologic map database that is sufficiently accurate and detailed (scale 1:24,000 to 1:100,000) to serve as a primary data source for most basic and applied earth-science needs in texas.activitiesactivities that will be supported by the FY2025 award will include (1) detailed new geologic mapping at a scale of 1:24,000 in four project areas that include the upper and middle texas coastal plain, central and north-central texas, and west texas (2) compilation mapping of a state natural area in western texas (3) creating a geothermal attribute dataset for a 40-county area in eastern texas (4) developing arcgis storymaps for two geoheritage sites and (5) creating a statemap fact sheet for texas.deliverables and outcomesthis project will produce nine new geologic quadrangle maps one compilation map of the chinati mountains state natural area in west texas a series of isothermal surface maps of the eastern texas region (40 counties) to support a multiyear effort to construct a statewide geothermal resources map and geodatabase gems databases for the 9 new maps, 1 compilation map, and an isovalue geodatabase for the eastern texas geothermal attribute area GIS story maps for two geoheritage sites and a new texas statemap fact sheet.intended beneficiariesthe intended beneficiaries of the geologic mapping and U.S. Geoframework initiative tasks include (1) federal and state governmental agencies engaged in the creation of accurate and seamless geologic maps and three-dimensional geologic models for the nation, (2) state and regional governmental agencies responsible for the management or regulation of land use, mineral resources, and groundwater in texas, and (3) landowners interested in a variety of geologic subjects including susceptibility to geologic hazards, industrial and critical mineral resources, geothermal resources, groundwater, oil and gas resources, coastal erosion and subsidence, wetlands, environmental stewardship, economic development, and geologic heritage sites.
