About this award
The University of Oklahoma, through the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS), received a $560,141 Cooperative Agreement awarded September 17, 2025, under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping (NCGMP) Program, CFDA 15.810, administered by the U.S. Geological Survey. The two-year project (September 2025 through September 2027) will produce high-quality geologic maps and digital databases supporting Oklahoma's citizens, industries, civil planners, and researchers.
The agreement encompasses three primary deliverables: (1) two detailed 1:24,000-scale geologic maps of 7.5-minute quadrangles in northeastern Oklahoma with accompanying Geologic Mapping Schema (GEMS) Level-3 databases, which will validate new stratigraphic correlations from an interstate collaboration; (2) one reconnaissance 1:100,000-scale map of the western half of the Eufaula 1 Sheet with accompanying GEMS Level-3 database, advancing statewide geologic map coverage; and (3) three new GEMS Level-3 databases digitizing previously hand-drawn maps of 7.5-minute quadrangles in southeastern Oklahoma along the Ouachita Mountain Front. All products will be delivered in digital formats compatible with the GEMS database standard, establishing a geologic framework for the state while supporting natural hazard assessment, resource exploration, and infrastructure planning initiatives.
Description
2025 statemap proposalproject period: 09 17 2025 through 09 16 2027PURPOSE the oklahoma geological survey (OGS) aims to produce high-quality geologic maps that benefitoklahoma s citizens, industries, civil planners, and researchers. The recipients have proposed three projects for the next two years (august 2025 to august 2027). The first project is a continuation of a multiyear plan thatfocuses on detailed mapping of northeastern oklahoma at a 1:24,000 scale. This project is based on thenew stratigraphy produced by a recent interstate stratigraphic reconciliation collaboration. The mappingefforts will reveal whether the stratigraphy observed in the subsurface extends east to the surface. Thesecond project aims to complete reconnaissance mapping of the western half of the eufaula 1 sheet. This effort is part of a long-term goal of creating a statewide geologic map coverage at a 1:100,000 scale. The third project involves creating gems level 3 databases of previously mapped 7.5 quadrangles along the ouachita front.activities the activities proposed during the three projects are to create new detailed maps, reconnaissance maps, and digital maps of previous hand-drawn paper maps along with accompanying digital gems databases. Detailed mapping will be performed in northeastern oklahoma to reconcile the new interstate stratigraphy, which was correlated from well logs from kansas into central oklahoma. Reconnaissance mapping of a new 1 sheet will also be accomplished. Lastly, previous hand-drawn maps along the ouachita mountain front will be converted into gems level-3 databases.deliverables and outcomes a total of two detailed geologic maps of 7.5 quadrangles in northeastern oklahoma and accompanyinggems level-3 databases one reconnaissance map with accompanying gems level-3 database of the western half of the eufaula 1 sheet and three new gems level-3 databases of 7.5 quadrangles in southeastern oklahoma. All products will be useful as independent maps and will get the state closer to its goal of having a completely updated state geologic map.intended beneficiaries the oklahoma water resources board, the cherokee, creek, and choctaw nations, the university of oklahoma, and oklahoma state university researchers and environmental consultants have all benefited from past statemap maps. This proposal aims to help the same populations. Projects 1 and 2 will be useful for researchers and petroleum industry professionals interested in the stratigraphy and geochronology of the pennsylvanian ERA in oklahoma.
