About this award
Award Summary
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of Acquisitions and Grants, operating under the Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808), awarded a $245,319 Cooperative Agreement to Indiana University (Trustees of Indiana University) effective September 30, 2025, through September 29, 2027. The project delivers subsurface geologic data and three-dimensional geological modeling services for Hendricks County, Indiana, supporting water resource management, land-use planning, and infrastructure development for the Indianapolis metropolitan area.
Indiana University will compile and analyze archived subsurface data including downhole geophysical gamma-ray logs, water well logs, and existing borehole information from Hendricks County and surrounding central Indiana counties. The award funds collection of five continuous wireline cores from deep boreholes drilled to bedrock, with subsequent core description, photography, and sampling at the Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS) facility. Complementary analytical services include particle size analysis via laser diffraction and pipet sieving, mineralogical and geochemical characterization through X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence, and borehole data visualization and cross-section generation using the Petra Software platform. Deliverables consist of processed borehole data, detailed lithologic descriptions, core photography, and particle size and geochemical analytical results integrated into a comprehensive three-dimensional geologic framework for subsurface glacial sediments.
