About this award
The University of Wisconsin System, through the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, received a $1.35M cooperative agreement from the U.S. Geological Survey under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) awarded September 4, 2025, with a completion date of September 3, 2027. This award supports geologic mapping of priority areas identified in the Survey's long-range mapping plan, with federal funds matched at least 1:1 by state-provided resources. Core activities include mapping of Quaternary and bedrock geology, field work and core sampling, laboratory analysis of mineralogy and geochemistry, compilation and interpretation of subsurface records, and development of geodatabases in the Geologic Mapping Schema (GEMS) format.
Deliverables during this award period include unpublished preliminary geologic maps and technical reports for portions of Dunn, Rock, and Buffalo Counties; a preliminary statewide water-table elevation map; digital isopach rasters for the Brainard, Fort Atkinson, and Scales Formations in northeast Wisconsin; digital surface rasters for the Pecatonica Member in Grant County and Paleozoic stratigraphic units in Outagamie County; and provisional and final digital geologic map databases. Awardee personnel will also present research findings at professional conferences and prepare for publication of resulting geologic maps and reports. These outputs support the STATEMAP component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program, which funds state geological surveys in producing maps addressing state-specific geologic mapping needs.
Description
Geologic mapping of priority areas in wisconsinproject period: (9 4 20259 3 2027)award purposethis award provides funding to the wisconsin geological and natural history survey to complete geologic mapping projects in priority areas identified by its long-range mapping plan and supported by the wisconsin geologic mapping advisory committee. Federal funds provided by the award are matched at least 1:1 with state-provided funding.activities to be performedplanned activities include mapping of quaternary and bedrock geology, field work and sampling, drilling of rock and sediment cores, laboratory analysis of the mineralogy geochemistry of rock samples and the radiocarbon age of organic samples, compilation and interpretation of subsurface records to facilitate subsurface geologic mapping, preparation of geodatabases in the gems schema, travel to conferences to present work and engage in professional development, and the preparation and publication of the resulting geologic maps and reports.deliverables and expected outcomesdeliverables for this award period include unpublished, preliminary geologic maps and an accompanying technical report for: dunn, part of rock, and part of buffalo counties in wisconsin. Another map deliverable will be a preliminary statewide map of water-table elevation. Additional deliverables include unpublished, preliminary digital isopach rasters for the brainard, fort atkinson, and scales formations of the maquoketa group in NE WI along with a digital raster surface of the base-fort atkinson formation a preliminary digital surface raster of the top-pecatonica member in grant county and preliminary digital raster surfaces of paleozoic stratigraphic units for five quadrangles in outagamie county. Finally, provisional digital geologic map databases of the new geologic mapping in dunn county and the statewide water table mapping will also be delivered, as well as final geologic map databases of previously-published geologic maps from dane and waukesha counties.future outcomes will include the publication of the preliminary geologic maps and databases listed above following completion of the mapping and successful peer review.intended beneficiariesintended beneficiaries include, broadly, all residents of wisconsin including public, private, and academic organizations. Specifically, the products will benefit land-use planners, environmental consultants, scientists studying the geologic history of the region, interested residents, and decision makers in local, state, tribal, and federal governmental agencies.subrecipient activitiesno subrecipients are included in this award.
