About this award
The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation received $153,856 under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP), State Component (CFDA 15.810) through a cooperative agreement awarded on September 5, 2025, with completion scheduled for September 4, 2027. The Vermont Geological Survey will produce surficial geologic maps and supporting geodatabases for three 7.5-minute quadrangles (Westmore, Orleans, and West Charleston) in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom region at a 1:24,000 scale. Deliverables include digitally prepared surficial geologic maps, cross-sections, and Geologic Mapping Schema (GEMS) Level 3-compliant geodatabases that will be made publicly available through the Vermont Geological Survey website.
This mapping project addresses a 50-year gap in geologic information for the Northeast Kingdom and builds upon prior STATEMAP funding from FY2023. The work will provide critical details regarding deglaciation processes and glacial lake formation and drainage in northern Vermont, supporting watershed planning and resource management. The intended beneficiaries include private consultants, government scientists, and the public engaged in groundwater, surface water, and lake water resource issues, with applications to clean water project prioritization and sand and gravel resource permitting processes.
Description
Proposal title: FY2025 vermont geological survey statemapproject period: 9 5 2025 9 4 2027PURPOSETHE purpose of vermonts FY2025 statemap proposal is to bring new surficial geologic mapproducts to the northeast kingdom (NEK) of vermont, an area has not been mapped in OVER50 years and that is the focus of long-range mapping plan. This mapping builds upon workdone over the past two years, and provides details of deglaciation in the area and details on thegeology in support of watershed planning. This work aligns with the greatest needs indicated bythe statemap advisory committee and supports the mission of the ncgmp.activitiesbased on the level of funding in this award, the vermont geological survey (VGS) proposes tomap the surficial geology of three 7.5-minute quadrangles at a scale of 1:24,000 under CATEGORY1 funding. These quadrangles include the full westmore, orleans, and west charleston 7.5-minute quadrangles. These quadrangles provide continuity with the sutton, newport, andnewport center quadrangles that were mapped as part of the FY2023 statemap award to thevgs.deliverables and outcomesthe deliverables associated with this project include digitally prepared surficial geologic maps, cross-sections and level-3 gems-compliant geodatabases for the westmore, orleans, andnorthern half of the west charleston 7.5-minute quadrangles. A stated goal and expectedoutcome of the proposed surficial geologic mapping is better delineation of the formation anddraining of glacial lakes in northern vermont. Final maps will be uploaded to the vgss website, making them available for use by local, state, federal, and private sector scientists.intended beneficiariesthe intended beneficiaries of this project work include private consultants, governmentscientists, and the general public engaged in a number of groundwater, surface water, and lakewater issues. The maps help to prioritize clean water projects, identify and then support thepermit review process for sand and gravel resources, and identify landslide-prone areas. Themaps are also used to set terms and conditions around development approvals that requirestormwater management and water supply systems. Now more than ever, society relies ongeoscientists to help solve these persistent and challenging issues, and these issues simply cannot be addressed without the baseline framework information generated by these statemap-fundedmapping activities.
