About this award

Summary

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded $388,050.13 to the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) through a cooperative agreement effective September 4, 2025, through September 3, 2026. Under this State Component (STATEMAP) award, the Tennessee Geological Survey will produce detailed 1:24,000-scale geologic maps and supporting geologic framework documentation for four quadrangles across Tennessee: the southeast portion of the White Pine quadrangle, the northwest portion of the Springvale quadrangle, the Dancyville quadrangle, and the southeast portion of the Crawford quadrangle. All deliverables will be compiled in Geographic Information System (GIS) format and will include cross-sections and stratigraphic descriptions in accordance with the USGS Geologic Mapping Schema standards.

Additionally, the award supports subsurface investigations and data modernization activities, including drilling three 300-foot boreholes to collect core samples for the Stanton quadrangle in West Tennessee to inform future mapping efforts, compiling previously digitized geologic maps from three additional quadrangles into the USGS standard format, and producing a 1:100,000-scale compilation map of the Nashville 30 by 60 quadrangle in Middle Tennessee. The program advances the state's responsibility to produce and disseminate detailed geologic information critical for economic development, infrastructure planning, and natural resource management across Tennessee.

Description

Title: new geologic mapping, drilling, geoframework maps, and level 3 gems maps by the tennessee geological surveyproject period: 9 4 2025 9 1 2026PURPOSE: a principal responsibility of the tennessee geological survey is to produce detailed geologic maps at the 1 to 24,000 scale (1 inch 2000 feet) for the state of tennessee and to disseminate the results of current and past geological investigations. The national cooperative geologic mapping program fiscal year 2025 statemap award will support efforts to conduct detailed surface mapping and subsurface investigations, and to convert the results of prior investigations into a modern digital format.activities: (1) conduct detailed 1:24,000-scale geologic mapping of the southeast-half of the white pine 7.5 quadrangle, the northwest-half of the springvale 7.5 quadrangle, the dancyville 7.5 quadrangle, and southeast-half of the crawford 7.5 quadrangle (2) complete a subsurface investigation to support future geologic mapping of the stanton 7.5 quadrangle in west tennessee by collecting core from three 300-foot deep boreholes (3) produce a 1:100,000-scale compilation map of the nashville 30 by 60 quadrangle in middle tennessee (4) compile the previously born-digital geologic maps of the bell, adair, and jackson north 7.5 quadrangles into the U.S. Geological surveys geologic mapping schema format and (5) update the tennessee fact sheet regarding progress of geologic mapping conducted by the tennessee geological survey.deliverables and outcomes: by the end of the award period, the tennessee geological survey expects to complete the field mapping and to compile in geographic information system format geologic maps for (1) the southeast-half of the white pine and (2) crawford 7.5 quadrangles, (3) the northwest-half of the springvale quadrangle, and (4) the dancyville quadrangle, which will each include a cross section and stratigraphic descriptions (5) a subsurface investigation of the stanton 7.5 quadrangle by selecting three sites to collect core from 300-foot deep boreholes and to incorporate the results into a summary report that contains a map of borehole locations, lithologic logs, and cross sections (6) a 1:100,000-scale compilation geologic map of the nashville 30 by 60 quadrangle, and geologic mapping schema databases for the (7) bell, (8) adair, and (9) jackson north 7.5 quadrangle geologic maps and (10) a document with a map and table communicating statemap support for geologic projects in tennessee.intended beneficiaries: this effort will benefit the public, industry, and agencies at all levels ofgovernment, because IT will provide new and previously published geologic data of significant value that has the potential to contribute to a wide range of current social and economic priorities. Land use planning will benefit from knowledge of potential geologic hazards, such as sinkholes in east tennessee and potential impact to important regional aquifers in west tennessee. The U.S. Geological surveys geoframework initiative will benefit from access to additional digital geologic map and subsurface data. Furthermore, easy access to subsurface databases and core samples will help the earth mapping resources initiative identify areas for active exploration to address future critical mineral resource needs.
