About this award

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection received a $235,566 Cooperative Agreement award dated September 5, 2025, under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP), CFDA 15.810, administered by the U.S. Geological Survey. The project, which extends through June 30, 2027, will produce geologic maps and Geographic Information System (GIS) datasets for five quadrangles in New Jersey. Specifically, the awardee will deliver combined bedrock and surficial geologic maps for the Buena and Hammonton quadrangles, a karst features map for the Milford quadrangle, and three Geologic Mapping Schema (GEMS) Level 3-compliant GIS datasets for previously published maps of the Pitman West, Pitman East, and Newton East quadrangles.

The project activities encompass compilation and interpretation of aerial and topographic imagery, field investigations to identify and describe geologic materials, map construction with supporting cross-sections and figures, and development of GEMS Level 3-compliant GIS datasets. Upon completion, all deliverables—including PDF maps and GIS datasets—will be made freely available to the public through the New Jersey Geological and Water Survey website in multiple publication series. The intended beneficiaries include land-use and water-resource managers, engineering and environmental consultants, geologic professionals, educators, and citizens interested in the state's natural history.
