About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey awarded a cooperative agreement to the Trustees of the Colorado School of Mines for $854,832 on September 15, 2025, under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810), STATEMAP component.
The Colorado Geological Survey will produce five 1:24,000-scale geologic maps of the Brush East, Peyton, Hamilton, Doyleville, and Mancos quadrangles and one 1:100,000-scale geologic map of Morgan County. Deliverables include a stratigraphic chart of post-Cretaceous rocks. Work encompasses compilation of satellite imagery, aerial photographs, lidar, and topographic data; fieldwork with GPS-based observations and measurements of geologic units, landforms, and deposits; sampling and analysis of rocks and deposits including luminescence, radiocarbon, detrital zircon, and petrographic analyses; and publication-ready geological maps. The maps will provide data for assessment of water, energy, and aggregate resources; identify geohazards including locations of problematic soils, landslides, and flood deposits; and support land-development planning in areas experiencing population growth.
The period of performance runs from September 15, 2025, through July 14, 2027. Work is performed in Colorado.
Description
Project period: 09 15 25 07 14 27 purpose the purpose of the statemap award for colorado is to provide quality geologic mapping that is freely available for use by all sectors of industry, consulting, governmental agencies, academia, and to the public. The colorado geological survey is proposing five geologic maps and one stratigraphic study in locations where population growth is leading to new development and where resources can be identified and evaluated. These maps will provide information for current residents, farmers, and agribusinesses in the area and for future planning and development. Potential resources include aggregate, ground and surface water quality and availability, minerals, and energy. Geologic hazard data will include locations of problematic soils (swelling and collapsible soils) as well as landslide and flood deposits. Activities activities include compilation of imagery (satellite, aerial photographs, lidar, and topographic data), and regional geologic maps to provide background and bases on which to map. Fieldwork will be undertaken to make observations and take measurements of geologic units, landforms, and deposits. Locations of observations and contacts between map units will be recorded using GPS systems in tablets. Important rocks and deposits will be sampled and submitted for analyses (e.g. luminescence radiocarbon, detrital zircon, petrographic analysis). All data will be compiled into geological maps and reviewed prior to submission for publication. Deliverables and OUTCOMES1:24,000-scale geologic maps of five quadrangles: brush east, peyton, hamilton, doyleville, and mancos and 1:100,000-scale geologic map of morgan county.deliverables and outcome - provide data for assessment of water, energy, and aggregate resources.
