About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded $637,730.99 to the State of Maryland Department of Natural Resources under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) on October 15, 2025, for a two-year project period ending October 14, 2027. This STATEMAP component award funds the production of new detailed bedrock and surficial geologic maps within Maryland's Piedmont and Coastal Plain physiographic provinces. The project comprises five integrated activities: new geologic field mapping and draft map production for the Westminster Quadrangle in the Piedmont and Church Hill Quadrangle in the Coastal Plain; digitization and Geologic Mapping Schema (GEMS) conversion of four previously published maps from the Maryland Piedmont; compilation of a stratigraphic chart for western Maryland's four physiographic provinces; and development of a statewide STATEMAP status map and fact sheet documenting past and current mapping work. All deliverables will be made publicly available through the Maryland Geological Survey's website.
The award supports systematic advancement of Maryland's geologic mapping infrastructure by combining newly collected field data with legacy map digitization to produce standardized digital geologic databases and maps in portable document format (PDF). Key deliverables include GEMS Level 3-compliant geodatabases, draft geologic maps, stratigraphic columns, and a statewide STATEMAP fact sheet. This cooperative agreement exemplifies the STATEMAP program's focus on generating geologic information critical to state economic, social, and scientific interests, including natural hazard assessment, water resource management, and infrastructure planning support.
Description
Proposal title: geologic mapping in the piedmont and coastal plain provinces of marylandproject period: 10 15 2025 10 14 2027PURPOSE:the purpose of this award is to provide new detailed bedrock and surficial geologic maps within marylands piedmont and coastal plain physiographic provinces, including collection of new data and the production of digital geologic maps from previous mapping. IT will fund a chart that shows the relation of geologic units in marylands four western counties and a status map of statemap geologic mapping across maryland. All products will be made available to the public through release on the maryland geological surveys web page.activities:project 1: new mapping of the westminster quadrangle, maryland piedmont, includes geologic field data collection and production of a draft geologic map in PDF format.project 2: new mapping of the church hill quadrangle, maryland coastal plain, includes geologic field data collection, drilling, biostratigraphic analysis, and production of a draft geologic map in PDF format.project 3: gems conversion of four previously published maps in the maryland piedmont includes GIS digitization from PDF map format, construction of gems geodatabases, and resolution of border busts with adjacent quadrangles.project 4: compilation of a stratigraphic chart for western maryland includes an initial literature search, construction of stratigraphic columns for four physiographic provinces and compilation into one stratigraphic chart.project 5: development of a maryland statemap fact sheet includes an initial data and publication search, compilation of this search into a database, and production of a digital map and PDF fact sheet with information on previous and current statemap work in maryland.deliverables and outcomes:project 1 will produce a PDF of a draft geologic map of the westminster quadrangle. Project 2 will produce a PDF draft geologic map of the church hill quadrangle. Project 3 will produce four gems level 3 geodatabases for the libertytown, woodbine, clarksville, and gaithersburg quadrangles. Project 4 will produce a stratigraphic chart of frederick, washington, allegany, and garrett counties, maryland. Project 5 will produce a map and summary table of all previous statemap projects in maryland.intended beneficiary(IES):intended beneficiaries include the public, private industry, and county, municipal and federal governmental agencies.
