About this award
The University of Idaho received an $845,578 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) for the period August 18, 2025 through August 17, 2026. Under this STATEMAP component award, the university will produce four detailed 1:24,000-scale geologic maps with subsurface cross-section interpretations covering the Weiser-Boise, Salmon, and Preston project areas, plus one 1:75,000-scale geologic map compilation with subsurface interpretation for the east portion of the Elk City project area. Additionally, the university will update Geologic Mapping Schema (GEMS) Level 3-compliant geodatabases for five previously completed geologic maps and establish new databases for the Weiser-Boise, Salmon, Rexburg, and Northern Idaho regions.
These geologic mapping products and digital geodatabases will address Idaho's long-term goal of achieving comprehensive 1:24,000-scale geologic coverage across the state. The deliverables support critical state and federal needs including geologic hazard assessment (seismic and landslide), geothermal and hydrocarbon resource exploration, water resource management, mineral resource development, and land management planning. Intended beneficiaries include Idaho state agencies, federal land managers, mining and petroleum exploration companies, engineering and environmental consultants, timber companies, academic researchers, and the general public.
Description
USGS idaho statemap gems FY25PROJECT period: 08 18 2025 through 08 17 2026AWARD purposethe proposed revised new geologic mapping addresses the needs for timely and useful geologicdata for the people of idaho and will serve the long-term goal of populating the entire state withdetailed, 1:24,000-scale geologic maps, and up-to-date compilations and GIS geodatabases. Thiswork serves the people of idaho by providing essential information for addressing issues relatedto geologic hazards (seismic and landslide), geothermal energies, hydrocarbon deposits, waterresources, and aggregate supply. Mineral resources also play a crucial role in the economichealth of idaho and the U.S. In general these resources include gold, silver, copper, phosphate, cobalt, zinc, and rare-earth elements. Quality geologic maps provide a geologic framework forthese industries, which aids in exploration and development of potential and existing oredeposits. These map data also benefit soil scientists and foresters, lending information that helpsguide fertilization and land management.activitiesnew detailed geologic mapping in three project areas (weiser-boise, salmon, and preston) and geologic compilation in east part of ELK city project area.
