About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey's Office of Acquisitions and Grants awarded $191,940.14 to the Office of the State Geologist under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP, CFDA 15.810) through a cooperative agreement executed on August 18, 2025. The award supports geologic mapping of three 7.5-minute series topographic quadrangles—Floral, Jamestown, and Pleasant Plains—in north-central Arkansas. The project, operating from August 18, 2025 through June 30, 2026, will deliver three new 1:24,000-scale geologic maps in Geologic Mapping Schema (GEMS) Level 3 geodatabase format as primary deliverables.
The awardee will execute comprehensive field data collection, geological interpretation, and digitization activities across the designated study area. Work products include the three geologic maps with associated technical documentation, rock sample descriptions, joint diagrams, unit correlations, and generalized stratigraphic columns for each quadrangle. All deliverables will undergo rigorous internal editing by geologic staff prior to publication. This project, funded under the STATEMAP component of NCGMP, benefits federal, state, and local public institutions, private industry, and Arkansas citizens by providing critical geological data for resource development, environmental planning, and scientific research. No subrecipients are involved in the award.
Description
Geologic mapping of 7.5-minute quadrangles in north-central arkansas: floral, jamestown, and pleasant plainsproject period: FY2025 (august 18, 2025JUNE 30, 2026) the grant will be used to collect field data in an area defined by three 7.5-minute seriestopographic quadrangles in north-central arkansas. This data will enable the publicationof three new, 1:24,000-scale geologic maps, namely the floral, jamestown, and pleasantplains quadrangles. Activities include data collection in the field area, interpretation of the data to drawgeologic maps and cross-sections, and digitization of map drawings and figures. Rocksamples collected in the field will be described and used to write map unit descriptions.field data will be used to create a joint diagram, a correlation of map units, and ageneralized stratigraphic column for each quadrangle. A map layout containing theseelements will be produced and converted to a gems level 3 geodatabase. The final draftwill be submitted to a rigorous editing process by geologic staff before publication. Deliverables include three new geologic maps in a gems level 3 geodatabase format. Beneficiaries include federal, state, and local public institutions, private industry, and thecitizens of the state of arkansas. There are no subrecipients
