About this award
The University of Arizona, operating as the Arizona Board of Regents, received a $1,042,976 Cooperative Agreement awarded September 5, 2025, through the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping (NCGMP) Program (CFDA 15.810), administered by the U.S. Geological Survey. The project, spanning September 5, 2025, through September 4, 2027, advances Arizona's geologic mapping infrastructure through three primary activities: detailed geological mapping of three quadrangles in the Southern Santa Maria Valley (Yavapai County), 1:100,000-scale compilation mapping of the Phoenix South quadrangle (Maricopa and Pinal Counties), and regional-scale compilation mapping of Arizona's Basin and Range Province.
The Arizona Geological Survey will deliver five major geologic mapping products: detailed geologic maps and Geologic Mapping Schema (GEMS) Level 3-compliant geodatabases for the Malpais Mesa, Date Creek Ranch, and O'Neill Pass quadrangles; a compiled geologic map and GEMS-compliant database for the Phoenix South 30x60 quadrangle; and a draft geologic map with GEMS-compliant database of the Basin and Range Province. These products serve diverse stakeholders including policymakers, professional geologists in engineering and environmental disciplines, academics, and the general public, with particular utility for infrastructure development planning, water resource management, and mineral exploration activities.
Description
Advancing detailed geologic mapping coverage and regional map compilations in arizonaproject period: 9 5 2025 through 9 4 2027PURPOSE:the arizona geological survey (AGS) has a long history of producing geologic maps in arizona. Thisproject continues that tradition with new detailed geologic mapping in west-central arizona, abroader-scale geologic compilation map of the phoenix south quadrangle, and the developmentof a regional scale geologic map of arizonas basin and range province that is the next steptowards a new geologic map of arizona.activities:1. Geological mapping in the southern santa maria valley area 3 quadrangles 2. 1:100,000-scale compilation mapping of the phoenix south 30X60 quadrangle, ARIZONA3. Compilation geologic mapping of the basin and range province, working towards a NEW1:500,000-scale geologic map of arizonadeliverables and outcomes:1. Geologic map and level 3 gems-compliant geodatabase of the malpais mesa 7 quadrangle, yavapai county, ARIZONA2. Geologic map and level 3 gems-compliant geodatabase of the date creek ranch 7 quadrangle, yavapai county, ARIZONA3. Geologic map and level 3 gems-compliant geodatabase of the oneill pass 7 quadrangle, yavapai county, ARIZONA4. Geologic map and level 3 gems-compliant geodatabase of the phoenix south 30X60QUADRANGLE, maricopa and pinal counties, ARIZONA5. Draft geologic map and level 3 gems-compliant geodatabase of the basin andrange province, arizonaintended beneficiaries:arizona geological survey maps are intended to be used by numerous stakeholders, includingpolicymakers, professional geologists in engineering, environmental, and minerals geology, student and academic geologists, and members of the public interested in their local geology. The map products will be particularly useful to planners and engineering geologistsinterested in resources for infrastructure development, environmental hydrogeologists interestedin water resources, exploration mine geologists looking for mineral resources, and communitymembers wanting to identify existing geologic hazards.
