About this award
Cooperative Agreement Summary
The University of Nevada, Reno Board of Regents received a $250,000 cooperative agreement (Grant Number G25AC00390-00) from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) to develop enhanced volcano monitoring capabilities in the Mono Basin, California. The award, effective September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2027, funds the Nevada Seismological Laboratory (NSL) to install four seismic monitoring stations (NN.MGN, NN.ADH, NN.MCC, and NN.SLK) that will address a critical gap in the USGS California Volcano Observatory's seismic monitoring network in this high-threat-potential volcanic region.
The primary deliverable is continuous, real-time seismic data from the newly installed stations integrated into NSL's existing regional monitoring network. This data will support three key objectives: volcano monitoring for the Mono Basin, regional seismic monitoring and earthquake characterization in the Eastern Sierra Nevada region, and contribution to ShakeAlert, the West Coast earthquake early warning system. The project leverages NSL's established expertise in operating regional seismic networks and prior successful collaborations with USGS to provide a cost-effective enhancement to critical volcanic hazard monitoring infrastructure.
Description
- Activities
- 1. Enhance volcano monitoring capabilities. The primary objective is to install fourseismic stations (NN.MGN, NN.ADH, NN.MCC, and NN.SLK) in the mono basinto provide continuous, real-time seismic data for volcano monitoring. These stationswill fill a critical GAP in USGS calvo s monitoring network in this high-threatpotentialvolcanic region.2. Support regional seismic monitoring. The seismic stations will be integrated intonsl s regional monitoring network, contributing to broader earthquake detectionand characterization capabilities in the eastern sierra nevada region.3. Contribute to earthquake early warning. Data from these stations will also supportshakealert, the earthquake early warning system for the west coast of the unitedstates, improving alert capabilities in this region.4. Provide open data access. All seismic data collected will be made available in nearreal-time to the public, calvo, and other interested parties through established datasharing protocols with organizations such as earthscope, other regional seismicnetworks, and the national earthquake information center (neic).deliverables and expected outcomes: this project will result in four fully operational seismic stations in the mono basin that provide continuous, high-quality seismic data in near real-time. The stations will be integrated into NSL s existing monitoring infrastructure, ensuring reliable data transmission and long-term sustainability. The enhanced monitoring capabilities will significantly improve the ability to detect and characterize seismic activity in the mono basin volcanic region.deliverables of this project are:1.a spatially referenced dataset, in which each trap location constitutes a row, describing temporally invariant metrics representing CRB habitat and landscape conditions.2.a spatially and temporally referenced dataset, in which each row represents a sampling period at a trap and a date, describing weather, management, and other dynamic conditions.
- Intended beneficiaries
- USGS, UNR and the general public.
