About this award
Oregon State University received a $447,546 Cooperative Agreement (G25AC00373) from the U.S. Geological Survey Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808), effective August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2030, to construct and operate an eddy covariance tower in the upper Klamath Basin for direct measurement of evapotranspiration (ET) and water flux data. The project will deliver core eddy covariance datasets along with associated meteorological and concentration data processed according to accepted protocols and submitted to USGS for public dissemination. Primary deliverables include construction of a 100-foot tall tower in the lodgepole pine zone, establishment of an AmeriFlux Network site with preliminary data, and ongoing tower maintenance with continuous data dissemination throughout the five-year performance period.
The project generates a comprehensive, continuous water flux dataset to support improved assessment of groundwater recharge and water availability across Oregon and the upper Klamath Basin. Publicly available research products will enable water resource managers, researchers, and the public to evaluate ecosystem function, water availability trends, and potential effects of land use change and restoration on water resources and habitats. Intended beneficiaries include the State of Oregon, USGS, and the general public accessing the freely available environmental monitoring data.
Description
Recipient name: oregon state university cooperative agreement number: G25AC00373PROJECT title: klamath basin evapotranspiration tower for water availability assessment overall project period: 08 01 2025 - 07 31 2030OVERALL budget period: 08 01 2025 - 07 31 2030AWARD purpose: this project will build an eddy covariance tower for direct measurement of ET and transpiration to better assess water availability in the upper klamath basin and throughout oregon. The project site will be an upland tall canopy tower in the lodgepole pine zone. The tower site will generate a comprehensive and continuous dataset of water fluxes to better estimate upper klamath basin ground water recharge and evapotranspiration for water availability assessment.activities to be performed:core eddy covariance data sets and associated meteorological and concentration data will be generated and processed using accepted protocols and submitted to USGS as well as published publicly. Deliverables and expected outcomes:objective 1. Build 100-FT eddy covariance tower and set up site instrumentation- objective 2. Establish ameriflux network site and provide preliminary data- objective 3. Maintain tower, disseminate data sets, and establish new research studies intended beneficiary(IES): this project will provide publicly available datasets available for researchers, managers, and the public to use to answer questions related to water availability, ecosystem function, and potential effects of land use change and restoration on water resources and habitats. The state of oregon, the USGS and the public.
