Description

Activities
(1) coordinate with the USGS, other government partners, and communities in southeast alaska to organize a framework focused on landslidepreparedness and response capabilities (2) collaborate with the USGS to develop and pilot aprototype landslide monitoring approach in southeast alaska, aimed at establishing a consistent, integrated statewide system, with final strategy recommendations delivered by the end of theperformance period (3) maintain a strong focus on targeted landslide hazard assessments andthe continued development of a statewide landslide inventory database (4) continue providinglogistical support for collaborative landslide fieldwork, including coordination of helicopter andfixed-wing aircraft services, as well as fuel procurement (5) continue engaging withcommunities in southcentral and southeast alaska to educate local leaders and residents onlandslide hazards, how to interpret landslide hazard maps, and CO-create tailored strategies thatmeet community-specific needs (6) continue to conduct fundamental research into theenvironmental, lithological, and climatic controls on the spatial and temporal distribution oflandslides and their occurrence (7) conduct targeted airborne ICE-penetrating radar (aipr)surveys to measure ICE thickness and map the bed topography of glaciers associated withlandslides that will improve understanding of the relationship between glacier dynamics andslope instabilities.deliverables and expected outcomes: (1) provide processed lidar and photogrammetricelevation data, imagery, and field-collected geologic data to the USGS and the public (2)continue expanding dggss alaska landslide inventory with newly mapped landslides andadditional details about those already mapped (3) maintain real-time access to weather stationdata for relevant sites in alaska (4) identify critical data gaps and resource needs to supportfuture landslide investigations and or the development of landslide monitoring programs (5)strengthen relationships with alaskan communities to improve access to public data systems thatcan inform and support local hazard mitigation plans.intended beneficiary(IES): private engineering firms, academic institutions, and state andfederal agencies frequently rely on dggs s data and field samples for research, slope stabilityassessments, and land-use planning. Access to these existing collections offers a cost-effectivealternative to conducting new fieldwork, especially in alaskas remote and logisticallychallenging regions, where collecting new samples and data can be prohibitively expensive.
