About this award
Texas Tech University received a $141,340 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of Acquisitions and Grants under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP, CFDA 15.810) to train the next generation of geologic mappers through mentored field-based mapping projects. Awarded on October 15, 2025, with a performance period through October 14, 2027, this EDMAP (Educational Mapping) component award will engage student mappers and a principal investigator in producing standardized geologic maps using traditional techniques integrated with modern software-based methods, including FieldMove Clino on iPads.
The project will deliver two new 7.5-minute quadrangle geologic maps for the Sena and Villanueva, New Mexico quadrangles; update stratigraphic nomenclature and bedding attitudes for three existing mapped quadrangles (Rowe, North Ysidro, and Laguna Ortiz); and synthesize existing contacts with newly obtained bedding measurements for the Tecolate quadrangle. All quadrangle maps will comply with database standardization requirements across multiple federal agencies and will be delivered in GEMS (Geologic Earth Mapping System) format. Beneficiaries include the USGS, the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Natural Resources, and Texas Tech University. No sub-award activities were included in this award.

In addition, the project will update three existing mapped quadrangles, rowe, north ysidro, and laguna ortiz, by updating the stratigraphic nomenclature andadding bedding attitudes. Finally, the tecolate 7.5 quadrangle will utilize existing contactsfrom a 1:250,000 geologic map with newly obtained bedding measurements.
