About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a $698,524 Cooperative Agreement to Oregon State University (OSU) under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808). The purpose of this award is to expand the scope and capabilities of the USGS National Climate Change Viewer (NCCV) web application. Key activities to be performed by OSU include:
- Incorporating new decision-relevant climate datasets into the NCCV
- Creating focused branches of the NCCV application for agency use cases
- Developing new climate datasets
- Summarizing datasets used in the National Climate Assessment
OSU will accomplish these goals by hiring a Faculty Research Assistant (FRA) to perform technical tasks related to climate model projections, such as data extraction, analysis, and visualization. The FRA will serve as a regional technical expert for the Pacific Northwest and liaise with Department of the Interior bureaus to enable more rapid incorporation of climate adaptation science into their plans, practices, and decisions. This project will enhance the USGS's collaborative relationship with OSU through co-production of datasets, publications, and mentoring opportunities.
Description

Oregon state university willaccomplish these goals by hiring a faculty research assistant (FRA) to perform climate servicetechnical tasks related to climate model projec?ONS, such as data extrac?on, analysis, andvisualiza?on. The posi?on would be funded by the climate adapta?on science center (casc)program to support the climate adapta?on technical support (cats) team and serve as aregional technical expert for the pacific northwest. The technician will also serve as a liaison todepartment of the interior bureaus and partners to enable more rapid incorporate climateadapta?on science into their plans, prac?CES, and decisions. The college of earth, ocean, and atmospheric sciences (ceoas), oregon state university (OSU)is a premier research INS?tute for climate science, where the USGS has had a longstandingcollabora?VE rela?onship. The faculty research assistant (FRA) supported by this agreementwould be mentored, supervised, and work directed by JAY alder as an in-kind contribu?on tothe climate adapta?on science center (casc) program, where ceoas is alders duty STA?on as acourtesy faculty member. Expanding the scale and scope of the USGS NA?onal climate changeviewer benefits all those in need of climate change informa?on, be IT federal agencies or statepartners. The USGS climate adapta?on science centers will benefit from the fras technicalsupport, as will regional science centers in the pacific northwest. The project will enhance theusgs rela?onship with OSU through the CO-produc?on of datasets, products, scien?ficpublica?ONS, graduate student theses, and mentoring opportuni?ES.
