About this award

This Cooperative Agreement award, provided by the U.S. Geological Survey under the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (CFDA #15.073), is intended to characterize and map the critical mineral potential of central Kentucky. The $372,803 award, effective September 1, 2024 through August 31, 2027, will fund the collection and analysis of rock and soil samples to better understand the distribution, geological context, structural controls, and mineral associations of critical minerals in the region. The project will compile and integrate existing geological data with new stratigraphic and geochemical information to develop a geological framework model and accompanying databases. The key deliverables include a final report, data tables, and maps showing the critical mineral potential of the study area. This work is expected to benefit the citizens of the United States and the scientific community by providing an improved understanding of critical mineral resources in central Kentucky.

Description

OMB project abstract summaryproject title: critical mineral potential of mississippi valley-type and phosphate depositsin central kentuckyproject period: 9 1 2024-8 31 2027THE purpose of this project is to characterize and map the critical mineral potential of centralkentucky. Samples will be collected for geochemical and petrographic analysis in order to betterunderstand the controls on the distribution of critical minerals in the study area. Existinggeologic data will be compiled and integrated with new stratigraphic and geochemical data andincluded in a geological framework model and accompanying databases. Completion of thisproject will improve overall understanding of the geometry and architecture of mineralizationand associated features in central kentucky and will provide essential data for the evaluation ofcritical and strategic mineral resources. A clearer understanding of the framework geology andgeochemical characterization of the prospective critical mineral exploration area will aid ininterpreting the origin and evolution of the mineralizing fluids and various ORE components. Thiswork is necessary to calculate resources and guide future exploration for critical minerals in thedistrict. The deliverables of this project are a final report, data tables, and maps. The data tableswill include various rock and soil geochemical data, and summaries of mineralogical andpetrographic observations. The maps will show the critical mineral potential of the study area.overall, this project will benefit the citizens of the united states and the scientific communityvia providing an improved understanding of the distribution, geologic context, structuralcontrols, and mineralogical associations of critical minerals in central kentucky.
