About this award
This $1,287,965.83 federal Cooperative Agreement award, made by the U.S. Geological Survey's Office of Acquisitions and Grants under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810), will support the Virginia Department of Energy in producing new digital geologic maps and stratigraphic information. The award will fund activities including mapping the geology in six new areas, compiling existing data on bedrock and surficial geology in three additional areas, converting nine paper and digital geologic maps to GEMS geodatabases, and completing a stratigraphic correlation report for the Virginia and North Carolina Coastal Plain. The resulting deliverables will consist of new geologic map products, GEMS geodatabases, and a Coastal Plain stratigraphic correlation report, which will aid land use decision-making, resource identification, conservation, and hazard mitigation in Virginia.
Description
Geologic mapping in the i-81 corridor and richmond metropolitan statistical area, and gemscompilation of existing geologic mapsproject period: 09 01 2024 - 08 31 2026VIRGINIA department of energynational cooperative geologic mapping program FY24 statemap awardproject abstract summarythis award will provide new digital geologic maps and stratigraphic information to meet the specific needs of virginia and to support the development of a comprehensive national digital geologic map. The proposed activities involve mapping the geology in six new areas, compiling existing data on bedrock and surficial geology in three additional areas, converting nine paper and or digital geologic maps to gems geodatabases, and completing a stratigraphic correlation report for the virginia and north carolina coastal plain units. Deliverables will consist of PDF versions of new geologic maps, including a map of the church road 7.5-minute quadrangle, and maps of portions of the bland, hebron, nebo, and speedwell 7.5-minute quadrangles. Additionally, maps showing the bedrock geology of the unmapped portion of the petersburg 30- x 60-minute quadrangle (figure 7 in proposal) and surficial geology for the western half of the petersburg 30- x 60-minute quadrangle will be provided. Level-3 gems geodatabases of the virginia portion of the lewisburg (surficial only), staunton, and roanoke 30- x 60-minute quadrangles will also be provided, along with level-3 gems geodatabases for the atkins, dutch GAP, elkton west, fosters falls, hanover academy, ironto, marion, rural retreat, and winterpock 7.5-minute quadrangles. A level-3 gems geodatabase representing the third phase of work for a 1:100,000-scale derivative karst geologic mapping project and a coastal plain stratigraphic correlation report will also be provided. The primary beneficiaries of this project are the citizens, businesses, industries, and local, state, and federal agencies responsible for making land use decisions. The geologic information within these maps and databases will contribute to cost-effective and environmentally conscious land development, aid in identifying crucial water and mineral resources, promote responsible land conservation and environmental restoration, and reduce the impact of natural hazards such as landslides, sinkholes, and earthquakes.
