About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a $340,841 Cooperative Agreement under the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (EMRI) program to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to conduct 3D bedrock geologic mapping in St. Lawrence County, New York. The 3-year project, running from September 2024 to September 2027, will produce 2D geologic maps and cross-sections depicting the spatial distribution and characteristics of geologic materials, including critical minerals, aggregates, and groundwater resources. The mapping effort will involve geological fieldwork, sample collection, and 3D modeling to improve the understanding of the region's geology and support land use planning, resource management, and infrastructure development by state and local agencies in New York.
Description
Lawrence county, new yorkproject period: 09 15 2024 09 14 2027PURPOSEFUNDING from the earth MRI (emri) geologic mapping program of the united state geological survey to the new york state geological survey provides financial resources to produce geological maps. More specifically, the FY2024 award period of performance will span from mid-september 2024 to mid-september 2027 and will be utilized to produce geological maps, reports, and charts that investigate and define the geological framework of the existing geologic setting. This includes the study and analysis of the vertical, horizontal and lateral distribution of rocks, minerals and sediments that occur within ST. Lawrence county, new york state, near the hamlet of pyrites. Specifically, the federal funding will be utilized to pay for travel for field work, to pay contractors to help collect geologic samples and perform analyses. All these efforts are to produce geological maps and scientific information that will improve the understanding of the geological layers and landscape within new york state and critical minerals.activitiesgeological fieldwork and mapping will occur in ST. Lawrence county new york state. Field work consists of field traverses and collection of rock samples from outcrops. Collection of drill core to produce three-dimensional geologic cross-sections displaying the extent and thickness of subsurface geologic layers and zones of mineralization.deliverables and outcomesthe resulting deliverables will include two-dimensional geologic maps and cross-sections depicting the spatial distribution of geologic materials both at the surface and in the subsurface. The maps, reports and information will provide geologic information on the distribution and character of geologic materials typically rock and sediment. Generally, the information provided will help define the location of critical geologic resources such as aggregates, critical minerals, and groundwater important for societal infrastructure.intended beneficiary(IES)the maps and data will provide earth science educational information on the natural history of new york state. The maps have immediate impact and value to the minerals division of the department of environmental conservation and industry. Simultaneously the maps and deliverables will provide pertinent geologic information to county land use officials such as health departments, highway departments, and water departments that manage and permit activities. State agencies such as parks, environmental conservation, thruway and transportation and other agencies will also be able to utilize the detailed scientific information on the geology to manage resources and long-range planning.
