Description

Applied invasive reptile laboratory and field research and graduate education opportunities for early career scientists.project period: 08 01 2024 - 07 31 2029THE U.S. Geological survey (USGS) is working with several federal and florida state agencies, ngos, and universities (including PI romagosa at the university of florida) on invasive reptile research focusing on the biology, ecology, decision support, and development evaluation of control tools. Working with these various organizations provides an experiential-learning opportunity for early career scientists to gain critical laboratory and field experience, learn about resource management, and build a base of scientific knowledge on the biology and ecology of invasive species. The invasive reptile project areas in this award aim to enhance the understanding of impacts by conducting research on reptile biology, reproductive potential, habitat use, and feeding behavior, while refining predictive models and habitat suitability assessments, and implementing novel techniques for early detection, monitoring, and control. These projects will provide opportunities for early career scientists to gain applied experience in invasive species science and management through internships and graduate programs.activities to be performed -1. Integrated monitoring and management approach for invasive reptiles in the everglades ecosystem - develop comprehensive monitoring strategies combining field observations, necropsy data, physiological investigations, and predictive modeling to understand the biology, impacts, and spread of invasive species. - implement innovative technologies such as camera traps, edna analysis, and bait optimization to enhance early detection, surveillance, and control efforts for invasive reptiles.2. Enhancing understanding and mitigation of invasive reptile impacts - conduct in-depth studies on the biology, reproductive potential, habitat use, and feeding behavior of invasive reptiles to inform management strategies and assess ecological impacts. - develop and refine predictive models and habitat suitability assessments tailored to invasive reptiles, incorporating physiological traits, ecological data, and emerging technologies to predict species distributions, spread, and vulnerability.deliverables and expected outcomes -expected outcomes include enhanced capture efficiency, improvement in early detection and management efforts, and the collection of critical biological and ecological data for invasive reptile population management strategies.intended beneficiary(IES) -agencies responsible for managing natural resources and combating invasive species, such as the national park service, florida fish and wildlife conservation commission, and the south florida water management district.subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award - n a
