Description

Activities
The ohio department of natural resources, division of geological survey is proposing bedrock topography mapping in clark county, ohio. This cooperative agreement provides funding to collect new geophysical field data in clark county. A total of 897 new geophysical data stations will be collected to better characterize the elevation of the buried bedrock surface. Geologists will incorporate new field data and previous mapping to contour this elevation surface. Bedrock elevation contours and data points will be used to create an interpolated elevation model surface that will become the primary data presented on the final map. These subsurface investigations will also result in cross sections that describe the three-dimensional nature of clark countys glacial sediments and aquifers.deliverables and expect outcomes: upon completion of this mapping project, a county-scale (1:62,500) bedrock topography map of clark county, ohio will be produced. This map is considered a deliverable product and will conform to united states geological survey cartographic and mapping schema standards.
Intended beneficiaries
The citizens of clark county and adjacent areas are the intended beneficiaries of these mapping products. Citizens of clark county withdraw their drinking water from quaternary-aged groundwater aquifers. A better delineation of the water-bearing quaternary geology units will provide greater insight into the present and future sustainable development of these groundwater resources. Quaternary geologic units also contain coarse materials near the surface that are important for mining and construction industries. These sand-and-gravel resources are multi-billion-dollar industries in ohio and provide the necessary materials to improve critical infrastructure like roads, bridges, building foundations, pipelines, electric substations, dams, and more. These maps can be used as a tool for citizens and local governments to make important zoning decisions.
