About this award
This Cooperative Agreement award, funded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808), will provide $200,000 in funding to Colorado State University from August 2024 to August 2029. The award will support research and development of cloud engineering and networking solutions to improve the performance, security, and accessibility of web applications that inform natural resource management and adaptive decision-making. Key objectives include enhancing online geospatial tools for evaluating and prioritizing landscape features like abandoned mines, improving data integration and delivery workflows, and implementing authentication and security upgrades. The project aims to facilitate participation in the BIL-funded Abandoned Mines Lands Initiative and develop transparent, stakeholder-driven applications to support environmental management and conservation efforts.
Description
Project period 8 19 24-8 18 25PROJECT title: data and web applications research and developmentthe data and web applications research and development project will deliver research and technical assistance that is timely and relevant to resource managers, and is needed to develop and implement sound adaptive management approaches. The results of this work will greatly facilitate participation in the BIL funded abandoned mines lands initiative and help to develop an online, accessible, and query-able geospatial application driven by explicit stakeholder needs that can readily and transparently evaluate and prioritize remediation sites, consider impacts of climate change, and monitor effectiveness of projects. IT will also support other geospatial efforts and cloud engineering research. This project will build cloud engineering and networking solutions for web applications that reduce vulnerabilities, increase efficiencies and improve development operations and systems administration. The objectives for this work are to:research and develop cloud engineering and networking solutions for web applications that reduce vulnerabilities, increase efficiencies and improve development operations and systems administration research and develop improvements to online, accessible, and query-able geospatial applications driven by explicit stakeholder needs that readily and transparently evaluate and prioritize landscape features such as disturbance, reclamation, and remediation sites research workflows and identify improvements innovative approaches in data integration, ingestion and delivery and the required cloud infrastructure to support these pipelines research and develop improvements that support authentication and security compliance workflows and processes to accomplish these objectives, the project will review current use of cloud engineering resources to identify processes that reduce vulnerabilities and improve performance for a broad suite of web applications that provide technical outreach data management that inform adaptive management decisions. Current use of geospatial technologies will be reviewed and determine how those technologies can be implemented to improve performance for a broad suite of application adaptive management decisions. Data ingestion and delivery methods will be reviewed and improvements determined that could be implemented for a broad suite of web applications that provide technical outreach data management that inform adaptive management decisions. Ongoing authentication and security compliance efforts will be reviewed to determine authentication upgrades and security compliance improvements that can be implemented to reduce vulnerabilities and improve performance for a broad suite of web applications that provide technical outreach data management that inform adaptive management decisions. Following review of these items, design and implementation of solutions for improved infrastructure for supporting geospatial web tools, for improved data ingestion and delivery methods, and for authentication improvements and security compliance will take place.
