Description
- Purpose
- A key tool for great lakes fish restoration is RE-establishment of populations through stocking of fish raised in hatcheries. One critical challenge for reintroduction efforts is producing hatchery fish that have high survival rates when repatriated into nature. Unfortunately, hatchery rearing can result in fish that are notably different from wild fish, such as differences in body shape, behavior, and most importantly, survival rates. The purpose of this award is to conduct experiments aimed at maximizing fish hatchery production (while minimizing costs) for restoration of great lakes fish populations. This will be achieved by studying the impacts of experimentally manipulated water temperatures on gene expression, morphology (body size and shape), and survival. The gene expression information provides insight into the underlying physiological mechanisms for how an organism is precisely impacted by thermal stress. Warmer water temperatures can speed growth and maximize hatchery output (and minimize costs), but a trade-off likely exists between fish survival when reared at high temperatures. This research will help optimize that trade-off through improved temperature conditions.
- Activities
- Will conduct aquarium-based laboratory experiments aimed at understanding how water temperature impacts the growth and survival of fish in hatcheries. Fish will be sampled at specific time points throughout the experiment and gene expression and morphological analyses will be performed.deliverables and expected outcomes: deliverables will include one or more peer-reviewed publications, presentations at scientific meetings, data and results to inform revise coregonine rearing protocols, and a completion report. Updates will also be provided during the course of the project to fisheries managers to facilitate rapid dissemination of project results to the intended beneficiaries.
- Intended beneficiaries
- This work will benefit the great lakes fisheries management community and individuals and organizations that rely on the fisheries resources in the great lakes basin. In particular, federal, tribal, and state provincial fisheries management agencies will benefit from refined knowledge regarding hatchery rearing practices to maximize the benefit-cost ratio.
