About this award
This $1,312,538 cooperative agreement awarded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) supports the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) in completing seven geologic mapping projects in Montana. The key products to be delivered include: 1) a 1:100,000 scale geologic map of the Dillon 30 x 60 quadrangle, 2) new 1:24,000 scale geologic maps for three 7.5-minute quadrangles, 3) a landslide map of the Virginia City area, 4) a surficial deposit compilation for six 1:100,000 scale quadrangles, and 5) subsurface structure contours and isopach maps for the Glendive and Glasgow 1 x 2 degree quadrangles. This funding will also support geochemical and geochronological analyses to aid the mapping. The geologic maps and data produced under this award will inform land use planning, resource management, and hazard mitigation efforts by state and local government agencies, as well as support scientific research in Montana.
Description
The state mapping advisory committee for the montana bureau of mines and geology (mbmg) has established two main goals. The first is to complete the mapping of the entire state at a scale of 1:100,000 to address montanas need for statewide, comprehensive, integrated, and publicly accessible geologic maps at a uniform scale. The second is to publish large-scale maps of montanas intermontane valleys, transportation corridors, and areas with significant structural and or stratigraphic problems, or other significant geologic interests.activities. The mbmg will complete seven mapping projects: 1) compilation of the dillon 30 x 60 quadrangle 2) detailed geologic mapping in the polson 30 x 60 quadrangle 3) detailed geologic mapping of the fort connah 7.5 quadrangle and the southern mission fault 4) completion and publication of non-statemap-funded maps 5) landslide map of the historic virginia city area, southwest montana 6) surficial deposit compilation for the 1:100,000-scale seamless geologic map of montana and 7) subsurface mapping of the glendive and glasgow 1 x 2 quadrangles, northeast montana. The new mapping will be supported by geochemical and geochronological analyses of samples prepped at the mbmg laboratory and analyzed at university laboratories.deliverables and expected outcomes. The final products of mbmgs fiscal year 2024 projects will include a geologic map of the dillon 30 x 60 quadrangle (scale 1:100,000) and a published gems database of the wisdom 30 x 60 quadrangle (scale 1:100,000) new geologic maps of three individual 7.5 quadrangles (scale 1:24,000) a map compilation of two non-statemap-funded 7.5 quadrangles (one map, scale 1:24,000) gems databases for five published 7.5 quadrangles (scale 1:24,000) a landslide map of the virginia city area (scale 1:24,000) a gems database containing a surficial deposit compilation for the opheim, scobey, plentywood, glasgow, wolf point, and culbertson 30 x 60 quadrangles (scale 1:100,000) and subsurface structure contours and isopach maps of stratigraphic horizons (n 5) in the glendive and glasgow 1 x 2 quadrangles with an accompanying database of borehole data and formation tops.intended beneficiaries. The mbmg is a non-regulatory agency with a mandate to collect and publish information about montana s geology to promote the orderly and responsible development of the state s energy, groundwater, and mineral resources. The geologic maps provide the foundation for all other mbmg investigations. Counties, local municipalities, and regulatory agencies use the geologic maps to plan for growth-related issues. Geologic data are frequently sought by the montana department of environmental quality the montana department of natural resources and conservation the U.S. And MT departments of transportation the U.S. Natural resources conservation service the U.S. Geological survey the U.S. Forest service the national park service county water-quality districts and planning boards mining and public utility companies educators and private citizens.
