Description

Louisiana geological survey FY24 statemap proposal project period: 01 july 2024 30 june 2025PURPOSE project 1 is set to produce three surface geology maps at 1:24,000 scale along the northern boundary of the pontchartrain structural basin within the coastal region of southeast louisiana, encompassing pleistocene to holocene sedimentary fluvial and coastal margin deposits disrupted by segments of the westeast striking tepetate-baton rouge system of high angle normal faults. Project 2 represents the initial effort to build a 3-d subsurface geologic model of the state of louisiana, with the immediate goal of a subsurface model of the area bound (roughly) by the atchafalaya basin to the west, the pearl river to the east, the mississippi louisiana state line (31O latitude) to the north, and the modern gulf of mexico shoreline to the south. The purpose of project 3 is to develop technical capabilities among LGS geoscientists to create and properly format digital subsurface data and models compatible with the ncgmp gems level 3 database, using sophisticated state of the art designed for processing new and legacy subsurface data into coherent, robust subsurface geological models.activities project 1: map unit distributions will be mapped based upon interpretation of lidar imagery and observations from hiking reconnaissance. Interpretations will be verified and unit lithologies determined from microscopic examination and XRD analysis of subsurface samples mechanically processed to separate clay VS. Silt and sand components. Hypotheses of fault traces will be tested by GEO-electrical techniques at the surface wherever practical. Project 2: existing geophysical wireline logs spanning the study area will be scanned and digitized for incorporation into subsurface modeling software, such as petrel. Information collected from well logs, such as borehole trajectories and locations, down-hole temperatures, and stratigraphic markers, and from older subsurface correlation models and surface geologic maps will be synthesized to build a 3-d subsurface model. Project 3: LGS personnel funded by this project will participate in training courses for the management and contribution of digital information in gems database and for the application of professional subsurface software such as petrel.deliverables outcomes project 1: three full color and annotated surface geology maps with standard marginalia of geographic information, map unit descriptions, and correlation diagrams. Maps will be accompanied by technical reports describing field and laboratory activities, observations produced, and resultant geologic interpretations and conclusions. Project 2: the study is expected to produce the following items for the ncgmp gems level 3 digital database: north-south and west-east bearing digital cross-sections, subsurface structural maps of lithostratigraphic units, and isopach and isochore maps for individual units. Project 3: project performance will be tangibly expressed as certificates or other recognition of success in completion of training modules. Expected outcome is the initiation of subsurface geological modeling as a component of the louisiana geological survey.beneficiaries geologic information produced by the study will inform community services, surface drainage management, infrastructure development, construction and demolition services, and private property use in an area of accelerated suburban growth. This information will represent a significant upgrade of subsurface information for exploration and harvesting of natural resources such as hydrocarbons, ores, and geothermal energy, for natural resource management agencies such as the louisiana department of natural resources, for carbon sequestration and other waste disposal ventures, and for state and federal legislators and regulators tasked with formulating conservation and use policies.
