About this award

This Cooperative Agreement award of $786,428.00 from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) will fund geologic mapping activities in the state of Iowa from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. The primary objectives are to improve understanding of the distribution and characteristics of geologic units in Iowa, provide critical datasets and maps to support decision-making, and collaborate with other agencies on regional stratigraphic issues. The award supports new surficial and bedrock geologic mapping of eight 7.5-minute quadrangles, including the creation of maps, cross-sections, and stratigraphic columns. Additionally, the funding will be used to develop GEMS Level 3 databases for the mapping products to meet USGS program requirements. The University of Iowa is the prime recipient for this award and will perform the technical work and data deliverables.

Description

Geologic mapping in iowa FY2024PROJECT period: july 1, 2024, to june 30, 2025PURPOSE and activities to be performed: the primary purposes for geologic mapping in the state of iowa are to improve the understanding of the distribution and characteristics of geologic units to provide critical datasets and maps to end users for effective decision making and to collaborate with other state and federal agencies on regional stratigraphic issues. New mapping in iowa (subprojects 1 and 2) includes compilation of all existing data, field investigations to confirm this data and fill in gaps, and creation of bedrock and surficial geologic maps and associated cross-sections, stratigraphic columns, and a summary report for each map. These projects will update regional bedrock geologic mapping units and refine surficial unit distributions. From a societal perspective, maps will help to address rapid expansion along a major transportation corridor, aggregate resource potential (identification and protection), flood protection, water quality and quantity concerns, as well as enhance critical minerals resource investigations. Beneficiaries include counties, municipalities, quarry operators, water users, watershed management authorities, and the iowa department of transportation among others. A gems level 3 database of a previously published and not superseded map will be submitted for each map deliverable (subproject 3). Maps will be available as arcgis files and pdfs though the iowa geological survey. Deliverables:subprojects 1 and 2- new mappingsurficial geologic map of the durant quadrangle, iowabedrock geologic map of the durant quadrangle, iowabedrock elevation and quaternary thickness map of the durant quadrangle, iowabedrock geologic map of the west liberty quadrangle, iowabedrock elevation and quaternary thickness map of the west liberty quadrangle, iowasurficial geologic map of the walcott quadrangle, iowabedrock elevation and quaternary thickness map of the walcott quadrangle, iowasurficial geologic map of the cotter quadrangle, iowabedrock elevation and quaternary thickness map of the cotter quadrangle, iowasurficial geologic map of the columbus junction quadrangle, iowabedrock elevation and quaternary thickness map of the columbus junction quadrangle, iowabedrock geologic map of the peosta quadrangle, dubuque county, iowabedrock elevation and quaternary thickness map of the peosta quadrangle, dubuque county, iowasubproject 3- gems compliancegems level 3 databases of four surficial quadrangles, three bedrock quadrangles, and the corresponding bedrock elevation and quaternary thickness elements, when available, to meet the USGS program requirements.
