Description

FY2024 project abstract summary - coloradoproject title: colorado geological survey statemap proposal for fiscal year 2024-2025.project period: august 1, 2024, to october 31, 2025THE purpose of the statemap award for colorado is to provide quality geologic mapping of areas of colorado, which are freely available for use by all sectors of industry, governmental agencies, academia, and general scientific interest to the public. Colorado has been a participant in the national cooperative geologic mapping program since the inception of the national geologic mapping act of 1992 as codified in chapter 43, sections 31A-h of the U.S. Code.for the award year of FY2024-2025 the colorado geological survey proposes the following projects that conform with the requirement stipulated in the national cooperative geologic mapping program announcement no. G24AS00043 for category 1 (new detailed mapping at 1:24,000 scale) and category 2 (activities in support of the U.S. Geoframework initiative).the first project area (#1) is the continuation of the colorado front range and the south platte river mapping programs. The recipient is proposing three new category 1, (guidance criteria 1) 1:24,000-scale geologic maps in northern and southern parts of the front range and south platte river project areas: wellington, brush west, and florence SE. These quadrangles have not yet had the surface geology mapped in detail and, as growth pressure increases and water resources become limited, these maps will become vital to understand both surficial deposits that may have problematic soil characteristics such as swelling soil and collapsible (hydrocompactive) soils, stream scour and migration, and ground water conditions and availability as a resource. The second project of this award year (#2) is category 2 projects also on the colorado eastern plains. Colorado is proposing two (guidance criteria 4) 1:100,000-scale compilation maps. The recipient will be completing the second and final phase of the northern front range piedmont area (nfrp) and seamlessly merge IT with the phase 1 work from last years award year (mapping announcement no. G23AS00050) for a final digital product. The second 1:100,000-scale compilation map will be of morgan county, colorado that straddles the south platte river valley. Phase 1 of this award year will include a literature search, and digitization and compilation of available geologic maps within the project area. CGS will also be field mapping the portion of the county that is north of the south platte river. The third project area (#3) proposed for the FY2024 award contains two additional category 1 (guidance criteria 1) 1-24,000-scale geologic maps in west colorado: monument butte quadrangle in the NW colorado program area and point lookout in the SW SAN juan program area. In both locations, detailed surface geologic maps with mapped surficial units (soils) have not been previously done. Monument butte is in an energy-rich area of NW colorado that contains poorly understood geologic structures such as folds and faulting. The point lookout quadrangle is near the town of mancos and a sizable portion of the quadrangle lies within the mesa verde national park where landslides have impacted the major park road.
