About this award
The California Department of Conservation received a $1,296,659.32 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey's National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) to conduct geologic mapping and digital compilation activities across the state of California. The two-year project, running from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2026, will result in the production of three new 1:24,000-scale geologic maps, two 1:100,000-scale map compilations, two GEMS Level 3 geologic map conversions, geochronology data for the USGS GEOChron database, and an updated STATEMAP fact sheet. These products will support the U.S. Geologic Framework Initiative by providing critical geologic data to inform land use planning, resource management, hazard mitigation, and scientific research efforts throughout California. The state will fully match the federal grant funding for this comprehensive geologic mapping project.
Description
- Intended beneficiaries
- The CGS will be the direct beneficiary of the grand award however, the completedproducts will be publicly available and posted to the CGS website and will serve multiple beneficiaries. The mapping will provide data on geomaterials, landslides, alluvial ages, faulting, and structural data thatare the basis for CGS seismic hazard map products addressing seismic slope instability, liquefaction, andfault rupture hazard zonation identification of fans and fan ages will aid in post-fire hazard analyses. Mapresults may also improve understanding of water and mineral resources, and support climate adaptationstrategies across the state. The mapping will benefit california residents, local city and county agencies, state and federal resource managers, practicing consultants, and professional researchers. The CGS is notengaging any sub-award or sub-recipient opportunities for this grant.
