Description
Oregon dogami FY24 statemap, geologic mapping for the following: walla walla basin, harney basin, and lake abert regionproject period: 07 01 2024 - 06 30 2025PURPOSE of awardthe oregon department of geology and mineral industries (dogami) conducts geologicmapping, creates, and maintains digital geologic databases, and collects high-resolution aerial lidarand geophysical data in order to characterize the state s unique geology and to enhance ourunderstanding of the states geologic resources and hazards. The FY24 U.S. Geological survey(USGS) statemap award will focus geologic mapping investigations in the walla walla basinof NE oregon and the harney basin and lake abert regions of SE oregon. These proposedprojects respond to statemap guidance criteria 1 and 5 to create or convert and submit new, gems-compliant (level 3) geologic maps to the national cooperative geologic mappingprogram. The work supports the U.S. Geoframework initiative by providing new geologicmapping, leverage existing data, and using enhanced databases to enhance scientific discovery, public usability, and informed decision making.activities to be performedfor the FY24 statemap proposal, dogami will construct detailed geologic maps of the threeproposed 7.5 quadrangles and a 1:100,000-scale map of the lake abert region based on detailedfield work and desktop interpretation of all available geologic data sets. Mapping will be supportedby thin-section petrography, XRF geochemical analyses of volcanic rock samples, and 40AR 39AR andu-PB geochronology. Gems (level 3) esri arcgis arcmap geodatabases will be constructedfor each map, as well as gems-level 3 conversions of three previously published maps.deliverables and expected outcomesdeliverables from this proposed work include: (project 1) 1:24,000-scale geologic maps, crosssections, and time-rock charts for the smeltz and helix 7.5 quadrangles in the walla walla riverbasin (project 2) a 1:24,000-scale geologic map, cross-sections, and time-rock chart for the CRANE7.5 quadrangle in the harney basin and (project 3) a 1:100,000-scale geologic map of parts ofthe lake abert, bluejoint lake, harney lake, and christmas valley 30 x 60 quadrangles in southcentraloregon. All maps will be delivered as high-quality PDF files accompanied by completegems (level 3) esri arcgis arcmap geodatabases. At the completion of the project, submission to the USGS, and external peer review, results will be disseminated through a digitalpublication in our geological map series (GMS). A total of seven published gems-level 3DATABASES will be delivered to the ngmdb concurrently with the four new proposed quadrangledatabases cited above for projects 13.intended beneficiary(IES)intended beneficiaries of this work include: (1) stakeholders and decision-makers in state and localgovernments in oregon (2) natural resource industries with ongoing exploration activities inoregon for critical minerals and metallic and non-metallic minerals and (3) academic and othergeoscience professionals interested in understanding the geologic and associated mineralizationhistory in oregon.subrecipient activitiesnone.
