About this award
This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (CFDA 15.073) provides $294,726 to the University of Wisconsin System to conduct geological mapping and mineral resource assessments in southwestern Wisconsin. The project will collect geologic data, including mapping bedrock units and sampling 200 rock specimens for chemical analysis, to better understand the occurrence of critical minerals in an area previously mined for lead and zinc. The funded activities will result in the publication of a geologic map, cross-section, and supplemental report, along with a geodatabase for GIS applications. The project aims to benefit stakeholders interested in the distribution of ore deposits in the region for applications such as water quality, agriculture, geotechnical engineering, and mineral resource development.
Description
Geologic map of the jonesdale and pleasant ridge 7.5 quadrangles, iowacounty, wiproject period: 07 01 24-06 30 27THIS award funds a project by the wisconsin geologic and natural history survey to collect geologicinformation about the occurrence critical minerals in an area mined for lead and zinc in southwestwisconsin. Critical minerals are important elements for manufacturing and national defense withtenuous supply chains and limited known domestic sources in the united states. Activities will includemapping the distribution of bedrock units in 90 MI2 area in southwest wisconsin accompanied bycollection of 200 rock samples for chemical analysis. Additional data will be collected on ORE samples todetermine their critical mineral content and to further understanding of the ORE-forming process. Ageologic map, geologic cross section, and supplemental report will be published at the end of theproject period, along with a geodatabase containing files of the map elements for use in geographicinformation systems. Numerous stakeholders are intended to benefit from this study, including thoseinterested in the distribution of ORE-deposits in the area for water quality, agricultural, geotechnical engineering, and mineral resource applications.
