Description

The cryosphere is contracting due to climate change, impacting polar and alpine environments with global consequences. In arid regions like much of the american west alpine ICE is a vulnerable buffer against drought providing freshwater to streams in the summer and fall. As a first step to predicting the future water resources in the arid west the recipient needs to document where and how much ICE currently exists. Here the recipient will focus on document ICE across the state of utah because IT hosts a range of ICE-bearing periglacial landforms, diversity of mountain physiographies, and is one of the most arid states in the nation. Activities to be performed. To address this lack of knowledge about where modern ICE persists, the recipient seeks to create two new geologic maps: (1) a map of periglacial, ICE-bearing landforms across utah (including new geochronological data to identify active versus inactive landforms). From the mapped landforms the recipient estimates internal ICE volumes using area-volume scaling relationships and provide catchment-by-catchment estimates of ICE volume. (2) the recipient will produce a detailed map of the thickness and ICE content of a single rock glacier using gravimetry and bayesian inversion in the timpanogos cave quadrangle, wasatch mountains, utah. Creating this detailed map will allow US to tune parameters in the area-volume scaling equation. This effort will provide the first estimates of ICE volume across utah. Because of the uncertainties associated with the area-volume scaling the recipient will provide maximum, most likely, and minimum estimates of alpine ICE in utah. The recipient expects that the ICE volume estimates will be included in projections of future water resources across utah.deliverables and expected outcomes. Geologic map 1 a .PDF map and database of vector data of periglacial landforms of utah to be published through the utah geologic survey. As a supporting dataset to this map, the recipient will estimate the age of several periglacial landforms in utah using cosmogenic surface exposure age dating. Geologic map 2 a .PDF map and raster dataset of the bed of timpanogos glacier to be published through the utah geologic survey. Through this project the recipient expects to mentor one graduate student and five undergraduate students through an experience teaching them to make geological maps of the surface and near-surface.intended beneficiaries. This work is intended to benefit the people of utah and those living in catchments downstream from utah by providing estimates of alpine ICE volume across the state.subrecipient activities. Undergraduate marcus tanner at the university of utah will act as the lead undergraduate mapper making the periglacial map of utah. Graduate student bronson cvijanovich at the university of utah will act as the lead graduate mapper making the map of the bed of timpanogos rock glacier in the wasatch mountains of utah. CO-PI mike thorne will mentor the lead graduate mapper and an assistant undergraduate mapper building a bed map of timpanogos rock glacier. CO-PI matt olsen with funding provided through utah valley university will mentor two undergraduate mappers outlining periglacial features across utah. CO-PI matthew morriss will mentor the mappers at the university of utah and utah valley university and facilitate collaboration with the utah geological survey.
