Description
Toward high reliability: novel power conversion system and power management control for water monitoring stationsproject period: 01 01 2024 through 12 31 2025THIS project aims to develop a robust and efficient power conversion system and intelligent power management control collaborating with the united states geological survey (USGS). Water resource information is essential to state, regional, and national economic health, protection of life and property, and effective management of water resources. Monitoring stations operate on a limited power budget, and insufficient energy production fromsolar panels can impede data collection during seasonal periods with limited sunlight due to tree canopy cover or winter periods characterized by fewer daylight hours and frozen precipitation covering the photovoltaic panels.to address these challenges, this proposal aims to develop novel power solutions and effectivepower management control, including exploring diverse alternative energy sources to meet thepower demands of devices in harsh conditions and employing a multi-layered verification process. This research will provide solid solutions for a reliable power system for U.S. Geological surveymonitoring stations by pursuing three approaches: 1) analyze current water monitoring systemsto optimize the design of a power management controller, 2) improve functionality of the powerconversion system to work with alternative energy sources, and 3) investigate the feasibility ofalternative energy sources and power transfer.through this project, the research team will create a fully functional and well-validated prototypeof the power conversion system and power management controller. Moreover, comprehensivetechnical reports will document the entire development process, outlining the methodology, analysis, design, and implementation of the power solutions. The reports will detail the results oflab-based experiments and field tests, providing a transparent account of the project s progress.consequently, the anticipated outcomes of this project are increased longevity of power systemsand enhanced reliability for water monitoring systems. The advancements in power conversion and management control will significantly benefit watermonitoring stations, providing them with reliable and sustainable power solutions tailored to theirunique operational challenges. Moreover, the improved monitoring station reliability will havepositive implications for the public, governmental agencies, and industries that rely on precisewater data for various purposes, including disaster management, environmental conservation, andinfrastructure planning.
