About this award

The University of Oklahoma, through its Office of Research Administration, was awarded a $619,140 Cooperative Agreement by the U.S. Department of the Interior's U.S. Geological Survey (CFDA 15.810 National Cooperative Geologic Mapping) to conduct two key projects over the September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2025 award period.

The first project involves detailed geological mapping along the Oklahoma-Kansas border to better understand the surface expression of the regional Pennsylvanian stratigraphic section, particularly the Marmaton and lower Skiatook Groups. This will help validate recent subsurface stratigraphic changes made by a regional working group. The second project will update older Oklahoma Geological Survey map products to a GEMS Level-Three compliant GIS database. These deliverables will provide detailed lithostratigraphic information to state and federal agencies, engineers, consultants, scientists, and regional urban planners.

Description

Pennsylvanian reconciliation and arcgis databaseproject period: 09 01 2023- 08 31 2025THIS proposal is divided into two projects: first, detailed mapping centered along the oklahoma-kansas border and keying on the surface expression of the regional oklahoma stratigraphicsection. Earlier this year a regional stratigraphic working group consisting of representativegeologists from geological surveys of kansas, missouri, nebraska, and oklahoma was organizedwith the intension of harmonizing pennsylvanian stratigraphy across state lines. Thereconciliation project has caused considerable change in the older, standardized stratigraphicsection of oklahoma. Although most of these deviations are simple nomenclatural changes (i.e.,elevating some formations to group or subgroup status) some parts of the section, particularlyunits within the marmaton group, have undergone significant lithostratigraphic along with thosenomenclatural changes. Many of these changes are based on subsurface correlations withminimal connection to their surface expression.second, this proposal is also designed to update recent statemap products to a level-threegems (geologic map schema) compliant database in GIS format.purposethe purpose of project 1 is to describe in detail the surface expression of geologic units makingup the marmaton and lower skiatook groups (desmoinesian) through mapping and determine ifthe subsurface nomenclatural changes to the section are warranted and valid at the surface. Thepurpose of project 2 is to bring older oklahoma geological surveys map products to gemslevel-three database compliancy, as well as noting any differences between the stratigraphicnomenclature present in the project database with that listed in geolex.activitiesproject 1 will be achieved by tracking all lithostratigraphic and facies changes that occur withinthe marmaton and skiatook groups beginning at the oklahoma-kansas state line and continuingsouth toward tulsa through detailed mapping of the interval.deliverables and outcomesproject 1 deliverables will include detailed 1:24,000-scale geology maps of the welch NW andhollow quadrangles with the purpose of achieving a better understanding of the desmoinesiansection of oklahoma. Project 2 deliverables will include gems level three-compliant databasesof the bristow and shawnee 1 geology maps to be used for geologists and civil engineers.intended beneficiariesto provide detailed lithostratigraphic information to state and federal agencies, engineers, consultants, scientists, and regional urban planners.
