About this award
The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received a $603,695 Cooperative Agreement award on September 20, 2023 from the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) under the U.S. Geological Survey. The one-year project will produce the following key deliverables:
-
New surficial geologic mapping and digital geologic map data for Warren County, Kentucky, including LIDAR-based landscape modeling, field examinations, and analytical data compilation.
-
Refined stratigraphic correlations and definition of contact surfaces for Upper Mississippian rock strata in western Kentucky to improve the Kentucky Geological Survey's 3D geologic database and support the U.S. Geoframework Initiative.
-
A preliminary digital inventory of selected federal and state geoheritage sites in Kentucky, cataloging the heritage connections for each site as part of a pilot project with the USGS.
The award will enable the Research Foundation to leverage its expertise in geologic research and mapping to support critical geological survey and inventory efforts within the state of Kentucky.
Description
Proposal title: new surficial geologic mapping, stratigraphic geoframework, and geoheritage inventory projects in project period: 09 20 2023- 09 19 2024ABSTRACT:the kentucky geological survey is proposing a one-year, three component project to be sponsored by the statemap component of the USGS ncgmp. Project 1 will produce new surficial geologic mapping and associated digital geologic map data for warren county, kentucky, following the guidance and direction of the kentucky state geologic mapping advisory committee. This new surficial geologic mapping will include lidar-based landscape modeling, field examination of landforms, sediment and soil characterization, and compilation of analytical data and field observations. Project 2 will examine available subsurface well logs, geologic map data, and unpublished cross-sections to better refine stratigraphic correlations and define stratigraphic contact surfaces for the upper mississippian series rock strata in western kentucky, to improve the KGS 3D database and support goals of the US geoframework initiative. In cooperation with a pilot project at the USGS, project 3 will compile a preliminary digital inventory of selected federal and state geoheritage sites in kentucky, including attribution for the heritage connections of each site.
