Description

Surficial and bedrock geologic mapping of the north-central tyonek quadrangle, south-centralalaska and alaska geologic map compilation and geochronology.project period: 09 15 2023 - 09 14 2025PURPOSE: the alaska department of natural resources, division of geological geophysical surveys (dggs) collect, archive, manage, and disseminate geological and geophysical data on the state s natural resources and geologic hazards, both in fairbanks and at the geologic materials center (GMC) in anchorage. Data collected and archived at these repositories support the agency s mandate to conduct geological and geophysical surveys to determine the potential of alaskan lands for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources the location and supplies of groundwater and construction materials the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures and conduct such other surveys and investigations as will advance the knowledge of the geology of alaska... (as 41.08.020). For guidance criteria 1, the award will facilitate the objectives to map and characterize surface and subsurface materials, better understand resource distribution, and facilitate geologic hazard investigations supporting the dggs mission. Guidance criteria 2 projects will create digital geologic datasets from analog maps and files to dramatically increase their public availability and utility.activities: the objective for guidance criteria 1 is to create a surficial- and bedrock-geologic map and level 3 gems-compliant database of the north-central tyonek quadrangle, southeast alaska (1:50,000 scale) through both imagery interpretation and field-based investigations. During helicopter-supported field investigations, the recipient will collect lidar to help guide preliminary mapping, collect data and observations to refine initial mapping and develop unit descriptions, collect samples for further analysis to facilitate geologic interpretations, and conduct paleoseismic investigations at several sites to investigate evidence of past earthquakes and assess geologic hazards. Additionally, as part of GC 1, the talkeetna mountains c-4 quadrangle previous mapping will be converted into a gems-compliant database. The primary activity for guidance criteria 2 addresses the construction of 1:100,000-scale and national-scale geologic compilation maps of alaska through the production of geologic map schema (gems)-compliant geologic map databases from legacy geologic maps. Dggs will also compile geochronologic data published by dggs mineral resources section for inclusion in the U.S. Geological surveys national geochronological database.deliverables and outcomes: for guidance criteria 1, dggs will deliver 1) a 1:50,000-scale comprehensive geologic map of the proposed area, and 2) tabular and map data used for mapping and geologic interpretations. Final maps and data will be published through the dggs website, available for those needing baseline geologic data in the region, including those making land use and planning decisions. For guidance criteria 2, dggs will deliver 17 geologic map databases composed of 24 total map sheets and alaska geochronologic data in the prescribed USGS database schema. Standardized digital databases of valuable legacy maps and data, in conjunction with new geologic mapping mandated by dggs to be published in gems, increase public access to and the interoperability of geologic data.intended beneficiary(IES): data and samples from dggs collections are examined frequently by private exploration and engineering companies, universities, and state and federal agencies as a critical step in research, resource development, and land management. Geologic geodatabases that are publicly accessible, digital, and standardized are particularly useful for these purposes.
