Description

Project abstract summaryproject title: west virginia statemap FY23, geologic mapping, map compilation, and associated U.S. Geoframework initiative projectsproject period: 09 01 2023 - 08 31 2025THE west virginia geological and economic survey (wvges) applied for funding through the USGS statemap program to continue bedrock mapping program in both creating new, high resolution bedrock geologic maps within the state of west virginia, and also to update the previously mapped areas to modern standards. Wvges selected multiple mapping areas within the state to align with various priorities that include, but are not limited to, fedmap related work, karst, and completion of areas in support of seamless mapping for the U.S. Geoframework initiative. Over the period of performance, the agency has agreed to create new, high-resolution geologic maps for the following 1:24,000 scale areas: west virginia portions of cumberland cresaptown, rupert, rainelle, and onego as well as equivalent gems databases for anthony, droop, trout, and greenbrier county portion of the ronceverte 24K quadrangles. The previously mapped areas that will be updated to modern, digital gems standards are the west virginia portions of the frederick and morgantown 1:100,000 sheets with the geology at 1:24,000, and a six-24K quadrangle area of mercer county in southeastern west virginia. The deliverables for all the areas listed above will allow for seamless integration into the national geologic map database. As part of the ongoing U.S. Geoframework initiative, the agency will also compile a list of geoheritage sites throughout the state, inventory all publications for the derogatory term identified in secretarial order 3404, and develop status maps for both 2D and 3D geologic visualization within the state of west virginia.
