About this award
The Virginia Department of Energy received a $746,312.20 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey's National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810). The funding will provide new digital geologic maps and stratigraphic information to meet the specific needs of Virginia and support the development of a comprehensive national digital geologic map. Key deliverables include:
- PDF versions of new geologic maps for five 7.5-minute quadrangles and two 30x60-minute quadrangles
- GIS geodatabases for compiled bedrock and surficial geology in several additional quadrangles
- A spreadsheet containing a downhole stratigraphic database for Virginia These geologic data products will contribute to cost-effective and environmentally-conscious land development, aid in identifying crucial water and mineral resources, promote responsible land conservation and environmental restoration, and reduce the impact of natural hazards like landslides, sinkholes, and earthquakes in the state.
